About the centre and our members
MERGA works to maintain the University of Agder's recognition as one of Europe's leading centres for research in mathematics didactics.
This is achieved by taking on leadership roles internationally, such as leading research groups at conferences, actively participating in international organisations, summer schools, and research seminars, as well as serving as editors for international research journals in mathematics didactics.
- Our vision is for our research to contribute globally by promoting better teaching and lifelong learning of mathematics.
- The researchers at MERGA are part of numerous international networks, through which they aim to have a global impact on research and development in mathematics didactics.
About our research groups
The research groups have a broad research interest, studying teaching and learning at all levels from kindergarten to university and lifelong learning. This is done by focusing on the use of modern technologies in the teaching and learning of mathematics, the application of mathematics in technology and society through mathematical modelling, and research on the use of textbooks and other tools in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Design research and task design are key approaches to collaboration with teachers in kindergarten and schools to improve mathematics teaching and learning. Such approaches are also vital in our efforts to equip student teachers and other mathematics students for their future careers.
MERGA is divided into three research groups within the areas where we conduct most of our research. This does not mean we do not conduct research in other areas that are only partially covered by the groups. For example, the names of the three groups do not reflect the fact that several of us research the use of technology in mathematics teaching and learning, nor the use of mathematics in non-mathematical practices. However, these research focuses are part of the work of all three research groups.
