Teaching

I teach mathematics and didactics at all levels in teacher education and (co-)supervise masters theses and one PhD project in mathematics education.

I am interested in student-centered and creative teaching methods that emphasize socially relevant themes.

I do public talks and seminars on topics such as everyday mathematics, mathematics in society and communication with statistics. I am currently press contact on the topics mathematics in school, everyday mathematics and mathematics in society.

I am currently involved in teaching MA-188 and MA-440.

Research

Mathematics is useful and relevant at all stages of life. In my research, I am interested in the role of mathematics throughout life and in society. In particular:

  • Lifelong learning of mathematics
  • Connections and disconnections between mathematics in school, work and everyday life
  • Mathematical practices in various specialisations and vocations
  • The mathematics needed to understand the news
  • Developing teaching and assessment methods that prepare students to become reflective and active citizens
  • How mathematics shape social institutions and influence democratic processes

Research projects include:

  • Mathematical Time, with Anders E. Wiik and Constantinos Xenofontos, where we explore contunuities and discontunuities in lifelong narratives of mathematical identity
  • Developing portfolio assessment of modelling competence for pre-service teachers (2025), with Jorunn Reinhardtsen, Kristina Markussen Raen and Anders E. Wiik
  • The coordinate project, aiming to research how coordinate systems are taught and learnt in Norwegian primary schools (2025-2026), with Vegard Topphol and Anders E. Wiik
  • Data visualizations in journalistic media studied from the perspectives of visual-numeric literacy, everyday mathematics and mathematization as a social process (2019-2025), with Anders E. Wiik, Pauline Vos and Martin Engebretsen.
  • The relevance of logarithms (2017), with Pauline Vos and Anders Wiik

I am member of the statistics education research network Nordic SPrED
