Good AI practices

Students and faculty members are responsible for ensuring that the use of AI does not undermine independent work, learning processes, academic integrity, research ethics, or professional responsibility. This page provides guidance and resources to support good AI practices.

When using AI

The use of AI is subject to the same internal guidelines, laws and regulations as all other activities at UiA. This includes, but is not limited to:

Good AI practice

Remember regulations

We recommend that you use approved tools in your work at UiA. Familiarise yourself with which tools are subject to restrictions, as well as which tools that cannot be used.

The data you intend to process in AI tools determines which tools can be used. Pay particular attention to data containing personal data. You should carry out a data risk assessment to determine whether the data is green, yellow, red or black.

Please also note that data may be protected by copyright. Uploading text or images from, for example, books or articles is, in principle, only permitted for material to which you yourself hold the rights.

Remember to think for yourself

AI-generated content must always be quality-assured by the responsible user before it is used, shared or published. Never use text or code that you do not understand.

Do not use AI uncritically as a reference work or search engine. It is your responsibility to fact-check information obtained through the use of AI.

Content produced by AI must be clearly labelled and must not be presented as work created by a person. State that you have used AI, how you have used it and which AI services have been used.

Responsible use in Education

As a lecturer, you may only require students to use tools procured by UiA. These are marked with an asterisk (*) in the list of approved tools. Any exceptions to this must be approved at the appropriate level. It is also your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the current student guidelines and to inform students about how the use of AI is permitted in your course.

Responsible use of AI in Reserach

The use of AI in research must be consistent with the general guidelines of the National Research Ethics Committees and in accordance with UiA’s core values for research ethics. You are responsible for your own research from the initial concept stage through to publication, including assessing the societal and ethical implications of the research and how the use of AI may affect them.

Responsible use of AI in Administrative Tasks

You are always responsible for the content, assessments and decisions you make. AI can misinterpret regulations and present incorrect information with great confidence. It is therefore important that you quality-assure and fact-check any material it generates. Use UiA’s approved AI solutions, and never include confidential information, personal data or sensitive data in your prompts.

Guidance is available at UiA

When using AI, you may occasionally encounter situations where you are uncertain how to proceed. If in doubt, speak with your manager or supervisor, or contact the AI coordinators (ki@uia.no) for advice.
