As a UiA employee, you must book travel through Berg-Hansen and register your credit card in your profile. When the trip is paid with UiA’s approved credit card, you are insured through the credit card’s travel insurance.
For trips longer than 90 days, you must verify that the credit card insurance still covers you.
Group trips booked through Berg-Hansen are also covered by UiA’s credit card insurance or travel account (invoice solution).
Trips not paid by credit card
If you travel and, for reasons beyond your control, the trip is not paid with a credit card, the following applies:
As a state employer, UiA is responsible for covering losses and damages when employees travel on behalf of UiA. The costs are charged to the unit's budget.
UiA is not permitted to purchase insurance for employees from insurance companies, except through credit cards.
Damage or loss of ordinary travel belongings is covered up to NOK 30,000.
In case of illness or injury within an EEA country or Switzerland, you have the right to coverage according to the rules of the country you are staying in. This right is normally documented with the European Health Insurance Card (available at helsenorge.no). If you do not have a valid card or your card has expired, order it online at nav.no; it will be sent by mail within about a week.
For illness or injury outside the EEA and Switzerland, necessary costs for treatment and documented costs for medical repatriation that are not covered by the National Insurance Scheme or other arrangements will be reimbursed.
Exception: It is possible to purchase insurance for single trips outside the EEA area following a specific assessment if insurance is necessary to obtain satisfactory treatment.
Especially for stays in the USA, it is strongly recommended to consider private health insurance. Contact insurance companies for offers.
Important points about insurance via the State
If the employee chooses to change the approved travel route, the insurance does not apply for the part of the trip that is not approved.
If your employee combines business travel and leisure, the insurance does not cover the leisure part once the business portion of the trip is completed.
If the employee is injured, for example, while jogging after the workday, they are not insured by the employer.
The employee is covered for loss of personal belongings brought on the business trip. Loss or damage must be reported to the employer immediately. As an employer, you may require that the employee has taken precautions to protect against theft, for example. The employee does not need to provide receipts for lost items.
Daily commuting to and from work is not considered travel time and must therefore be insured privately.
In cases where the unit pays the annual fee on the employee’s credit card, the insurance connected to that credit card applies.
Be aware that an annual travel insurance policy usually only covers a limited number of days per trip and requires that you return to Norway for the insurance to be valid again. Therefore, look for insurance that covers the entire period you will be away.
Private Insurances
When traveling on behalf of UiA, UiA will only cover necessary expenses, and will not cover loss or damage to personal belongings that are not essential for the trip. Therefore, it may be appropriate to purchase private insurance at your own expense. This can include health insurance as well as other types of insurance such as theft, repatriation, accident, liability, and more.
If you choose to take out private insurance, it is recommended to verify whether the insurance covers travel undertaken on behalf of your employer.
Travel on behalf of UiA or scholarship travel
UiA has decided to apply the same insurance rules for travel on official assignment for UiA and for scholarship travel.
