Travel insurance

UiA employees must book their travels through Berg-Hansen and register their credit card there. You will then be insured through your credit card when travelling. This applies to the credit cards that UiA has an agreement with.

For trips that last longer than 90 days, make sure you check if you are covered with your credit card insurance.

For group travel booked through Berg-Hansen, you are covered with the travel insurance provided through the UiA credit card or through a travel account (paid by invoice)

Travels not paid with credit card

If you are travelling and the trip, for reasons outside your control, was not paid for by credit card the following applies:

As a state employer UiA is responsible for covering loss and damage (in Norwegian only - contact the Division of Human Resources for further information) when employees travel on University business. The damage cover is taken from each unit’s budget.

UiA will not take out insurance from insurance companies (other than through credit card coverage)

Loss of or damage to baggage is covered with up to NOK 30,000.

With sickness or injury in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you can claim coverage according to the rules of the country you are in. The European Health Insurance Card (helsenorge.no) officially documents that you are entitled to coverage of medically necessary healthcare. You should carry the card if you travel to another EEA country or Switzerland. If you don’t have a card or your card has expired, order it online (nav.no), and it will be sent to you by mail within a week.

With illness or injury outside EEA and Switzerland, medically necessary healthcare as well as repatriation expenses not covered by the National Insurance Scheme or other schemes will be covered.

Exceptions: It is possible to take out insurance for trips to countries outside of the EEA if an assessment indicates that insurance is required to receive adequate treatment.

Especially with travels in the US, we strongly recommend considering a private insurance policy. Please contact insurance companies for offers.

Be aware that annual travel insurance normally covers a certain number of days and requires that you return to Norway before your next trip. Make sure you have insurance that covers you for the whole period you plan to travel.

Important points about insurance via the government

If an employee chooses to change an approved travel route, the insurance will not cover the part of the journey that was not approved.

If an employee combines a business trip with leisure time, the insurance will not apply to the part of the journey that occurs after the official business trip has ended.

For example, if an employee injures themselves on a run after the workday has ended, they are not covered by employer insurance.

The employee is covered for the loss of personal items brought on the trip for work purposes. Any loss or damage must be reported to the employer immediately. As an employer, you can require that the employee has taken precautions to protect against theft. Employees do not need to provide receipts for lost items.

Daily commutes to and from work are not considered travel time and must be insured privately.

If the employer pays the annual fee on the employee's credit card, the insurance linked to the card will apply.

Be aware that annual travel insurance usually covers only a certain number of days at a time and requires returning to Norway for the coverage to apply again. Therefore, check for insurance that covers you for the entire period you will be away.

Private insurance

When travelling on behalf of UiA, the University will only cover necessary expenses and not cover loss or damage to possessions unessential to the trip. It is therefore recommended to take out private insurance at your own expense. This may apply to both health insurance and other insurance policies like for theft, repatriation costs, injury, legal liability and more.

If you choose to take out private insurance, we recommend that you make sure the policy covers business travel.

Business trips or scholarship travel

UiA has decided to treat business trips and scholarship travel equally with regards to insurance coverage.
