General description and profile of the programme

The bachelor's programme in physical education and sports consists of a two-year integrated study plus a minor subject. The profile of the programme is 'Development, learning and achievement in sports from a coach and supervisor perspective'. Through the study, students will gain competence in biological topics such as human anatomy and physiology, movement theory, basic nutrition, motor development and performance development. Other parts of the programme focus on the psychological and social aspects of sports such as motivation, learning, facilitation, guidance and leadership. Another important aspect of the bachelor's programme is the focus on various sports activities, both individual sports, team sports and other physical activities.

The second year of study consists of a minor subject where the students choose a one-year programme or a collection of courses relevant to the bachelor's programme and later professional career. It is also possible, after further agreement, to choose other one-year programmes or collection of courses than those listed in the structure below. It is also possible to take one or two semesters as an exchange student.

In the third year of study, the students will, in addition to sports courses, have a course in scientific method and statistics that prepares them to write the bachelor's thesis in the last semester.

Teaching and learning methods

The intention is to create a learning environment that develops the students' ability to reflect on and critically evaluate their own work methods facing theoretical and practical knowledge. Various forms of teaching methods are used, such as lectures, group work with supervision, seminars, instruction, project work, student presentations, individual work, laboratory work, practical sports activities and excursions.

All practical teaching, laboratory teaching and excursions are compulsary with a requirement of a minimum of 80% attendance. Other compulsory teaching will appear from the course descriptions. All compulsory teaching will be specified in Canvas.

A master's degree in sports science, in addition to practical pedagogical education (PPU), will provide opportunites for work in the education system. Relevant jobs may also depend somewhat on what is chosen in the second year.

The programme qualifies for admission to the faculty's master's programmes in sports science, and in public health sciences at the University of Agder. Other master's programmes and further education in sports at other institutions may also be relevant.
