Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

Teaching language

Norwegian (but some of the lectures may be taught in English)

Recommended previous knowledge

IDR138 Exercise physiology

IDR104 Anatomy and Sports Biomechanics

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student:

  • should have broad knowledge of, and be able to apply different models for planning of training
  • have a broad knowledge of physiological factors of importance for sports performance
  • be able to explain how recovery and performance nutrition affect sports performance
  • be able to perform different laboratory-based test methods to evaluate training status
  • be able to apply relevant sport-specific field-based tests
  • have knowledge of new thinking and innovation processes in sports performance
  • have knowledge of methods for analysing and monitoring team sports

Contents

In this course, students learn about different perspectives on physiological prerequisites for athletic skill development and factors of importance for sports performance. There will be a clear link between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation, as well as data collection and interpretation. Throughout the course, students are introduced to various methods for testing, monitoring and evaluating training status - both in the laboratory and in the field - and with the use of different technologies.

The following topics are included in the course:

  • Planning of training

    • Demand and capacity analyses
    • Intensity, duration and specificity
  • Training periodisation and peaking for performance
  • Theoretical basis for physiological adaptation
  • Working in the test laboratory, the role of the test leader, hygiene and safety
  • Restitution and performance nutrition
  • From laboratory to field

    • Various exercise physiological tests for measuring training status
    • Indirect measurements/field tests and sport-specific tests
    • Analysis tools
    • Practice with analysis in practical classes

Teaching and learning methods

The forms of work will vary between lectures, practical work in the laboratory and in the field, group work and individual work.

All practical teaching related to laboratory and field work is compulsory.

The expected workload is 270 hours.

Examination requirements

  • Approved active participation in compulsory teaching

See further description in the semester plan on Canvas.

Examinations

Portfolio exam with two assignments:

Assignment 1: Planning of training (work in groups)

Assignment 2: Choose from several topics/assignments covered in class (work individually)

See detailed description in Canvas.

Assessment terms: One overall graded grade is given.

A new/postponed portfolio exam will not be organised.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:
