Admission requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Recommended previous knowledge

Language skills equivalent to level 2 in upper secondary school (general studies branch) are recommended. A language course or a stay in Germany is also recommended. It will be very demanding to follow the programme without any previous knowledge.

General description and profile of the programme

The one-year programme in German will provide insight into the German language, German-language literature and the history and culture of the German-speaking countries. Information is provided about any study stay in Germany at the start of the semester.

From a sustainability perspective, this study programme is relevant in that it promotes skills in and knowledge of a key foreign language. Such knowledge and skills are an essential prerequisite for effective communication across countries, languages and cultures, and thus make a significant contribution to the work to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, seminars, exercises, and individual supervision in German. Digital tools and/or interactive learning and exercising tools will be introduced through a digital learning platform. Students are advised to actively participate in classes and attend the digital platform on a regular basis. The language of instruction is German.

Assessment methods

Forms of assessment may vary; written assignments, written school exams and oral examination (including presentations). See the course descriptions.

Internationalisation

Students in the one-year programme in German may (depending on availability) have the opportunity to participate in a two-week stay at The German-Norwegian Study Centre in Kiel.

The one-year programme frequently accepts incoming exchange students from German-speaking and other countries. They take one or several courses through the programme and they represent a significant opportunity for “internationalisation at home” for our native students.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

The one-year programme in German can be part of a study course leading to teaching certification and employment opportunities in secondary school and upper primary school 5-10.

The programme may also provide a useful background for a broad spectre of professions in which knowledge of German language and culture is an important qualification, within education, media, publishing and communication. The programme qualifies graduates for pursuing further studies in German. The course may be included as a minor subject in several other bachelor programmes offered at UiA.

Student evaluations

Study programme evaluation is conducted annually in the programme committee in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.2.

Other information

The University of Agder (UiA) encourages increased use of digital tools in its study programmes. The aim is to utilize new forms of communication and to try new arrangements for teaching and academic supervision. Students at UiA will to an increasing extent be using computers in their daily academic work. A transition to digital examinations is an important part of this process. It is a requirement that all students at UiA have their own portable computer ('laptop') for use in teaching and examinations, see Examination Regulations, University of Agder, §12d.
