Thematic Focus Areas

The Centre’s work is guided by three thematic focus areas: Language, Text, and Technology in Kindergarten, School, and Teacher Education; Democracy and Citizenship in Education; and Practice-Oriented Education Research.

Language, Text, and Technology in Kindergarten, School, and Teacher Training

Competencies and skills have long been key concepts in the educational landscape, both in Norway and internationally. Education is not only about transmitting knowledge but also about developing skills and stimulating various competencies for the future. At the same time, rapid technological advancements continuously reshape the competencies needed for the future and how that future will look. This thematic research field focuses on the study of language, texts, and technologies in the education system, including subjects such as Norwegian, English, foreign languages, and KRLE (Christianity, Religion, Philosophies of Life, and Ethics).

Our research focuses on how technologies provide new conditions for education and learning in kindergartens, classrooms, and in the context of student engagement. This includes digital learning resources, computer games, virtual reality technologies, and especially generative artificial intelligence (AI). Current research projects are generating new and nationally pertinent insights into how AI technologies challenge and reshape educational contexts, and the subsequent implications for pedagogy and subject didactics. We carry out empirical studies, facilitate intervention research, and design new teaching tools and methodologies in close collaboration with relevant practitioners. Our researchers maintain extensive and well-established networks with kindergartens and schools within the region, and are actively involved in numerous research projects and collaborations led by UiA and other organizations.

Democracy and Citizenship in Education

Through the thematic field Democracy and Citizenship in Education, Udforsk focuses on research related to early childhood education, schools, and higher education that aims to develop knowledge contributing to the creation of a humane and democratic culture in education and society. This includes efforts to combat hate and strengthen children’s and young people’s sense of belonging and political participation.

In collaboration with relevant regional actors as well as international partners, we examine issues and societal developments connected to the educational mandate for democracy and democratic citizenship, exclusion, racism, extremism, children’s and young people’s participation, and more. The research explores shared arenas, teaching practices, governance mechanisms, historical developments, and conceptual work related to key concepts such as democracy and participation, among others.

Practice-Oriented Education Research

Practice-oriented educational research is about connecting research to practice in early childhood education settings, schools, and teacher education. We conduct research on and in collaboration with stakeholders such as counties, municipalities, and the higher education sector. Within the priority area of Practice-Oriented Educational Research, we aim to expand both the research field and the field of practice. We engage in both basic and applied research to further develop and strengthen competencies in early childhood education, schools, and higher education.

The research aims to involve pupils and students in research projects at local, national, and international levels. We collaborate closely with the region through funding schemes and participate in partnerships through the university alliance FORTHEM.
