The rights policy at UiA
UiA has adopted a rights policy that clarifies the rights of UiA and the university's employees concerning research and work results. The rights policy applies to all employees at UiA.
The rights policy at UiA aims to:
- Ensure that the academic freedom of researchers and the institution is maintained.
- Raise awareness of the value represented by research results.
- Increase awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting the research results created.
- Create clear and predictable frameworks for internal and external collaborators.
- Enhance the opportunities for effective and purposeful utilization of research results within academia, society, and industry.
The rights policy is based on the principles outlined in the Norwegian Copyright Act (åndsverkloven in Norwegian) and the Employee Inventions Act (arbeidstakeroppfinnelsesloven in Norwegian) and should be considered in conjunction with these laws.

Intellectual property rights in research collaboration
UiA is obligated to ensure that research results are available for further research and teaching at the institution. Beyond this, ownership and exploitation of the rights are a matter for negotiation between UiA and the relevant collaborators.
A common practice in research collaboration is that each institution/organization owns its own results from the project, and that results can be used by each other to carry out the project and for further research and teaching. Commercial use of others' results typically requires a separate agreement.
The legal expert in the Research and Innovation Department can assist in drafting and quality-assuring agreements concerning intellectual property rights.

Commercialisation of research
Have you made a discovery or developed an idea related to your research that you believe could become a useful product, service, or bring about societal change?
UiA Nyskaping can assist in clarifying how the rights to your innovation are distributed and can draft agreements for the transfer of rights where applicable.
Norwegian law and the rights policy at UiA provide guidelines on who gets the rights to an innovation created by employees. If the innovation arises from collaboration with other research institutions, existing collaboration agreements may also guide the distribution of rights.
Employees at UiA are obligated to report inventions. UiA encourages the reporting of all ideas and innovations that could become a useful product or service. Reporting early makes it easier for UiA Nyskaping to provide you with prompt and effective assistance.
