1. Mapping, evaluation, and budget

Map the reasons for choosing the programme

Why should prospective applicants choose this programme, and why UiA? Before beginning active marketing, it's important to have clear answers to these questions.

It could be helpful to involve students (and potential students) in this mapping process. Perhaps they value different things than anticipated.

Feel free to contact us for assistance with this process.

For example, consider:

  • Study quality
  • Job prospects/societal needs/relevance
  • Attractiveness
  • Active student environment
  • Facilities
  • Lecturers
  • Specific subjects/flexibility
  • Services and support (Math assistance, writing studio, mentoring)
  • Internships
  • Internationalisation
  • Follow-up
  • Results/statistics (student satisfaction, candidate surveys, etc.)
  • Testimonials (students/alumni)

Evaluate and improve the programme website

Are we effectively highlighting the good reasons for choosing this programme, identified earlier?

Consider the following:

  • Career opportunities
  • Description of the programme, its uniqueness/attractiveness, and the opportunities it offers
  • Videos
  • Images
  • Facilities
  • Testimonials (students/alumni)

Order paid advertising

Contact us for advertising in digital channels like Facebook, Google, online news outlets, and other websites.

A budget must be set, and we can assist with budgeting. The more you know about your target audience and the reasons for choosing the programme, the better your ads will perform.

Different digital channels require different content. For example, vertical videos are standard for Snapchat and much of Instagram. We can help you choose the right channel based on your content, budget, and target audience.

Note: Contact us well in advance. It takes about 2 weeks from inquiry/order to ad activation.

Allocate internal resources for marketing activities

We fully understand that faculty administration has many tasks.

Much can be done if there are people dedicated to it, but following the steps in this list is not automatic and requires time and follow-up. A good plan, along with time for execution and monitoring, is essential. We recommend that the faculty allocate resources for this, both in terms of money and people who can prioritise it.

A faculty resource can assist in areas such as recruiting student ambassadors, creating content for study offer pages, and participating in planning Open Day and other events, to name a few.

Follow up with applicants more closely

There are several ways we can give applicants a strong sense that they made the right choice, prepare them for the study programme before they start, and ensure they are well-prepared to begin both academically, socially, and practically.

Some are already following up with applicants through interviews or entrance exams—others may want to consider creating their own contact points before the start of the course:

  • Send emails to applicants?
  • Offer a student chat?
  • Ensure good information on course start is available early
  • Students calling applicants (or available to answer calls)
  • Facebook group for incoming cohorts (note: requires quality assurance and follow-up)
  • Offer an informational Zoom meeting before/over the summer?

2. Content for websites and social media

Create videos, photograph, and interview students/alumni

Content featuring students and alumni is well-received and works effectively for advertisements.

Examples of content include:

  • Text interviews
  • Podcasts
  • Film interviews
  • Promotional films
  • Takeover/Vlog for social media

Regular updates are recommended, ensuring that interviews are no older than 3 years. At least one video interview should be present per study page.

We can assist with interviews, editing, and publishing, but we need your help in finding suitable students. Speak with instructors and study programme leaders for suggestions.

Initially, we recommend sending out an interview guide and then proceeding with podcast and film production with those who are relevant for the content.

How to create a student interview (in Norwegian)

How to create a career interview (in Norwegian)

Share good content via UiA's social media

Instagram.com/uiagder is our main channel for student recruitment through social media. We fill this channel with content created by students employed as content producers.

Feel free to share any good content with us that can be shared.

We also assist in editing texts on the study pages, or other pages focused on student recruitment. Do you have ideas for topics? Let us know!

Instagram.com/uiagder and tiktok.com/@uiagder are our main channels for student recruitment through social media. The channels are filled with content produced by students employed as content producers. Much of this content is created in collaboration with other students.

Do you know any students who would like to contribute content, or who would be suitable as content producers, or have ideas for content? Get in touch! Also, share any good content with us that can be shared.

Engage students in the student chat (Unibuddy)

Unibuddy is a chat solution that allows prospective students to get in touch with current students and gain insight into their experiences of being a student at UiA. Here, your students can create a profile.

3. Physical measures

Invest in the student environment

Satisfied students are the best form of marketing.

Active students and well-functioning student associations can be catalysts for a lot of positive engagement, a strong reputation, and support in marketing efforts.

Student involvement also provides you with many people to rely on when it comes to staffing stands at Open Day, the start of term, and other events, such as mentors and student ambassadors, or for contributions to social media and other marketing.

Use students and alumni

Do you have students or former students who can be interviewed? We can assist in creating both career interviews (with alumni) and student interviews. The interviews are published on the study pages and can be used in advertised marketing.

We also need your help in finding student ambassadors. UiA hires student ambassadors every year who visit upper secondary schools across the country to talk about UiA. The student ambassadors visit over 200 schools and meet around 30,000 upper secondary students during January/February. The announcement for these positions is made every September.

Offer campus tours/visits

We are working on developing a "Meet UiA" page, which will be a portal for anyone wishing to visit UiA, whether they are families or school classes. The goal is to be able to invite both general and more specific visits and tours, depending on the wishes and needs.

In the meantime, we are happy to help with both setup and student ambassadors to welcome visitors in the best possible way!

Target relevant audiences

Can a lecturer or student visit a school/class/hour as an academically relevant guest lecturer?

For some programmes, there may be interest organisations, Facebook groups, associations, or other channels/groups that are relevant to the programme. Is it possible to get in touch with them?

Do we know of relevant students who have studied something else with us previously (alumni with bachelor backgrounds or those who have completed a one-year programme)?

For master's programmes: All bachelor students are potential master's students – and they probably have more options than they realise. They should be informed about all of them. Are there other colleges or universities that graduate bachelor students who qualify for this programme but do not offer a relevant master's programme themselves? Would they be interested in letting us tell them about the opportunities their students may have for further study at UiA?

Perhaps student associations or student ambassadors could help establish contact and present the programmes, in cases where it makes sense.

4. International recruitment

The faculties, the communications department, the admissions department, and the international office each have different roles and responsibilities for study programmes that are offered entirely in English.

The process leading up to the application deadline for international graduate students in a study programme at UiA is divided into four phases. Read more about international recruitment and international graduate students.
