Bullying and harassment in the work environment

UiA has a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and harassment.

Bullying and harassment are some of the most serious problems in the working life. These issues can become very devastating for both the one who is subjected to them and for the work environment. The employer must immediately do something about such instances.

Bullying

The employer is responsible for surveying the work environment and implementing measures where the survey revealed problems, including measures to prevent bullying.

Above all, it is important to take the problems seriously and deal with new problems as early as possible. The manager has a significant responsibility for doing this by

  • intervening in smaller conflicts
  • investigating the problem’s scale and character
  • making sure it is possible to report without fear of reprisals
  • respecting the duty of secrecy
  • informing people about the existence of counselling and support services
  • getting help from independent parties, when necessary

There are clear procedures at UiA for how such cases should be handled.

Sexual harassment

The Working Environment Act states

  • Employees shall not be subjected to harassment or other misconduct.
  • Employees shall ensure that the employer or the safety representative is notified as soon as employees become aware of harassment or discrimination at the workplace.
