Leave for care of close relatives

In accordance with the Working Environment Act §12-10, you are entitled to leave for up to 10 days to care for close relatives with a necessary care or support need. Close relatives in this context are parents, spouse, cohabitant, or registered partner.

When can you take leave?

What is considered necessary will vary and must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Situations where the person needing care is unable to manage on their own, such as accompanying them to a doctor, dentist, specialist, or hospital due to acute illness or for tests, grant the right to leave.

Routine tasks such as housework and shopping are excluded.

According to the Working Environment Act, there is no legal entitlement to pay during this type of leave. However, the Main Collective Agreement §22 assumes that as a public sector employee, you may be granted compassionate leave with pay for up to 12 working days in such situations.

The same rights apply for the necessary care of a disabled or chronically ill child.
