Your manager will assess each case individually to determine whether compassionate leave is granted.
Compassionate leave with pay
You apply for compassionate leave through DFØ.
Throughout the year, compassionate leave with full pay may be granted for a total of 12 working days, or alternatively 24 working days with 50% pay. Part-time employees can receive the same number of days off as full-time employees.
The responsibility for assessing whether a situation warrants paid compassionate leave lies with your immediate manager with personnel responsibility.
Examples:
- Moving: One day.
- Settling into kindergarten: Up to three days.
- First school day: One day (pre-school day).
- Your own wedding: The day of the wedding.
- Attending a funeral of close family, other close relatives, or colleagues: Up to one day, plus up to two additional days for necessary travel.
- Death of a close family member: Duration assessed individually.
- Doctor’s appointments: Leave with pay may be granted when needed for medical visits. It may be necessary to differentiate between full-time and part-time employees in these situations.
- Accompanying children to doctor or dentist for routine check-ups: Leave with pay can be granted. If the child is sick, it falls under the "child’s/childcare provider’s illness" category.
- Providing necessary care for parents, spouse, cohabitant, or registered partner (e.g., accompanying them to doctor, hospital, dentist, etc.): Leave with pay may be granted.
The following do not qualify for compassionate leave:
- Planning days
- Parent-teacher conferences/follow-up meetings at kindergarten or school
- Waiting for tradespeople
- Parent breakfasts at kindergarten, etc.
Compassionate leave without pay
The authority to decide on applications for unpaid compassionate leave is entirely given to the employer, who must evaluate each case individually. A discretionary assessment must be made, balancing the applicant’s interests and needs against the business’s needs.
Applications for unpaid compassionate leave are assessed by the immediate manager with personnel responsibility.
