Research infrastructure at UiA
At UiA, we offer advanced research infrastructure that facilitates groundbreaking research and innovation. Here is an overview of our laboratories, data centres and specialized facilities.
Artificial intelligence: Supercomputers
The Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) at UiA has invested in powerful supercomputers to strengthen its research in artificial intelligence. They have a total of 14 such machines, capable of performing vast amounts of calculations in a short time.
DSyNC: Brain research laboratory
DSyNC (Dynamical Systems Neuroscience Collaboratory) is a brain research laboratory that was established at UiA in Kristiansand in 2022. It is led by researchers Hanne and Tor Stensola.
CIEMlab: Crisis management technology
CIEMlab is a "living lab" created for conducting research and innovation in future crisis management technology. A living lab is a user-centred experimental environment where users are actively engaged in the exploration, design and testing.
Mechatronics Innovation Lab
UiA is a co-owner of MIL, which offers technology, testing equipment and expertise for innovation in mechatronics and related disciplines such as robotics, sensor technology, autonomy, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and industrial 3D printing.
Catapult Centre: Future Materials
UiA is involved with Future Materials, a national centre focused on the development and testing of materials. The centre provides advanced test facilities, expert knowledge and a network to support businesses in creating sustainable, advanced materials for both their current and future products.
Laboratories in engineering sciences
UiA has several laboratories focused on mechatronics, civil engineering, renewable energy and materials science.
Centre for e-health
In the i4Health building at Campus Grimstad, you will find modern laboratories, simulators and test facilities. These laboratories are used for research, teaching and testing of e-health products and solutions.
UiA Motion Lab
This is an indoor laboratory for offshore mechatronics, featuring two Stewart platforms and an industrial robot mounted on the larger platform to simulate scenarios involving vessel-to-vessel lifting and handling.
Academic Esports Lab
This laboratory is designed both for teaching academic esports and for training, competing and actively engaging in gaming and education. Here you will find 30 full-fledged high-end gaming setups, configured for all types of gaming, including the latest in esports, streaming and video editing/production.
Laboratory for experimental linguistics
The Experimental Linguistics Laboratory (ELL) is equipped to conduct research using eye tracking, EEG and behavioural methodologies.
Simulation and clinical laboratories
At the Department of Health and Nursing Science, we offer modern clinical laboratories with dedicated simulation facilities at both campuses. These laboratories are used for teaching, skills training, simulations, courses and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Laboratory, training and testing facilities
At the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, we have a state-of-the-art laboratory along with training and testing facilities that cover endurance, strength and power, fundamental motor skills, body composition analysis and ultrasound. We boast a extensive range of equipment that meets high scientific standards.
KODEM: Coordinated Online Panels
Through KODEM, researchers can pose the same questions simultaneously to four different sub-populations. This is a pilot project for research on democracy and governance in Norway.
Text lab: TRAWL Corpus
The TRAWL Corpus (Tracking Written Learner Language) is a longitudinal and multilingual corpus that features authentic school writing by students in Norwegian schools.
In addition we also have:
- Future Interaction Lab - an advanced laboratory for XR and multimedia
- Electronics Lab - tools and measuring instruments for teaching in the electronics engineering programme
- Infrastructure for research and teaching in the natural sciences
- Music, visual arts and theatre - multiple rooms and diverse equipment for performance and research
- Video and audio studio with several editing rooms for professional video productions
- Biosensor technology equipment - for research on teaching and learning processes
