"The government has set a goal for Norway to become one of the most digitised countries in the world by 2030 and for everyone, especially in the public sector, to adopt artificial intelligence. This project is crucial to advancing both business and public sectors into the AI age," says Professor Morten Goodwin at UiA.

Goodwin and other researchers at the University of Agder are participating in the new EU project Oceanopolis. It particularly aims to help start-ups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises which often struggle to adopt new technology. The project offers free guidance, training and the opportunity to test technology before companies invest.

EDIH Oceanopolis

EDIH Oceanopolis is one of two Norwegian 'European Digital Innovation Hub' networks.

Project partners:

  • DIH Oceanopolis
  • NORCE
  • Nordic Edge
  • Mechatronics Innovation Lab
  • Kunnskapsparken Helgeland
  • Noroff
  • University of Agder
  • VIS, Vestlandets innovasjonsselskap
  • Kupa
  • Prios kompetanse
  • Valide
  • Vekstpartner

The full name of the project is EDIH Oceanopolis. EDIH stands for European Digital Innovation Hub.

The project has received NOK 20.9 million from the EU's Digital Europe Programme. About 1.2 million of this goes to UiA.

Green transition with AI

"Through the project we will use artificial intelligence to drive green transition. It is about energy efficiency, circular economy and climate-friendly transport. These are important societal challenges where AI can make a real difference," says Goodwin.

For businesses this can mean new opportunities to cut costs and become more environmentally friendly.

UiA contributes with knowledge

"UiA contributes with top expertise in AI, machine learning and decision support systems. Oceanopolis gives us a unique channel to test and confirm the value of new research in direct collaboration with industry," says Goodwin.

The university is one of twelve partners in the collaboration. Researchers can try out their ideas with businesses. This way companies gain new knowledge, while researchers learn how the technology works in practice.
