UiA is purchasing the Canvas software from Sikt, a service provider to the education sector. Virtually all universities and university colleges in Norway use this learning platform.

According to a statement on Sikt’s website, Instructure has discovered that unauthorised parties have gained access to the system, and it is likely that data on Norwegian students and staff in the higher education sector has been compromised.

The information may include:

  • Name
  • Email addresses
  • Student ID numbers
  • Messages between users

UiA has notified the Norwegian Data Protection Authority and posted a message about the incident in the Canvas system.

Much remains unclear. UiA’s name has appeared on an unconfirmed list of affected institutions.

May be misused for fraud

UiA is asking staff and students to be particularly vigilant against potential phishing attempts (attempts to obtain sensitive information) and other fraudulent schemes in the coming period, as information from the breach may be misused for this purpose.
