“We have received the news of the King’s passing with great sadness and send our warmest thoughts to the Royal House and the royal family,” says Whittaker.
A period of national mourning, also known as ‘landesorg’, has been declared, running from Friday 28 August until after the funeral.

Activities at UiA
In accordance with the Government’s guidelines for state institutions, academic activities and events may proceed as planned, but within a dignified framework. This means that teaching, examinations and similar activities will, in principle, continue as normal, unless otherwise notified.
People are welcome to mark the period of mourning with, for example, a moment of silence and/or a picture of King Harald.
Purely social events or celebrations organised by UiA that have no work-related connection must be cancelled or postponed.
Student societies and student organisations are encouraged to assess their events during the period of mourning. In some cases, it may be better to go ahead with events in a subdued manner rather than cancelling social gatherings at such a time.
UiA will take part in the national observance of mourning on the day of the funeral with a minute’s silence at 13:00. Further information on how the day of the funeral will affect UiA will follow.

Write your condolences
The University has a special connection with the Royal Family, as Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit officially opened the University in 2007.
UiA has set up condolence books at both campuses.
Everyone is invited to write their condolences. The books will be sent to the Royal Household after the period of mourning.
The condolence books are available on tables in Vrimlehallen at Campus Kristiansand and outside UiA Hjelp at Campus Grimstad. They will be available for condolences during UiA Hjelp’s opening hours:
- Monday - Friday: 8:00 - 21:00
- Saturday: 8:30 - 16:00
