Areas of responsibility
As programme coordinator for biology, I have academic responsibility for the bachelor’s degree, the one-year biology programme, and the new online version launched in autumn 2024. I also serve as academic lead for the PhD specialisation in natural sciences.
Teaching
I teach at the bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels, with a primary focus on conservation biology and quantitative methods. I am currently responsible for the following courses:
- BIO102 Botany (BSc)
- BIO115N Cell Biology (online)
- BIO119N Zoology (online)
- BIO207 Marine Conservation Biology (BSc)
- BIO415 Study Design, Data Analysis, and Reproducible Science (MSc)
- BIO603 Statistics in ecological sutdies (PhD)
- BIO604 Advanced statistical methods in ecology, evolution and environmental sciences (PhD)
- BIO606 Introduction to Bayesian Analysis (PhD)
I also contribute intermittently to the following courses:
- BIO111 Cell Biology (BSc)
- BIO112 Introduction to Biology (BSc)
- BIO117N Introduction to Biology (online)
- BIO119N Botany (online)
- BIO201 Aquatic Ecology (BSc)
- BIO300 BSc Thesis in Biology
- MA143 Biostatistics (BSc)
- BIO409 Mariculture (MSc)
- BIO413 Benthic Ecology (MSc)
My teaching is research-based, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented. I emphasise active student engagement and the development of analytical and methodological skills. In courses with a quantitative component, I use R as a core tool and structure the learning around a reproducible workflow for data analysis and modelling. Students work with authentic datasets and real-world problems, often directly linked to ongoing research projects.
I have developed and revised a range of courses in conservation biology, research design, and statistics, both at UiA and at previous institutions. My teaching experience spans three countries and includes courses at SLU (Sweden), Novia and Åbo Akademi (Finland), as well as international professional development courses in statistical modelling. I also have experience with digital and hybrid teaching formats, both as instructor and course developer.
I supervise students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels, and have also mentored technical staff and project students. As a supervisor, I focus on developing students’ independence, analytical abilities, and scientific judgement. I prioritise close follow-up, constructive feedback, and academic confidence—and see supervision as a central part of building the next generation of researchers and environmental professionals.
Research
My research spans evolutionary ecology, conservation biology, and evolutionary responses to environmental change. I work at the interface of applied and fundamental science, with particular focus on human impacts on species, populations, and ecosystems.
Much of my recent work centres on the ecology, population structure, and restoration of native and invasive bivalves in northern Europe, especially the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the Pacific oyster (Magallana/Crassostrea gigas).
I have a long-standing interest in amphibian life-history evolution and local adaptation, and more recently have explored symbiotic interactions between amphibians and green algae.
Other areas of focus include species distribution modelling, ecological monitoring, and the integration of genetics and modelling in biodiversity management. My research is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and policy-relevant, with strong links to coastal restoration and sustainable resource use.
