Ticks are found in most parts of the world, and more than 900 species have been identified so far. The many tick species have different geographical distributions, and they can spread various bacteria and viruses. The most important tick species in Norway is the sheep tick (also called the castor bean tick) (Ixodes ricinus). It is widespread in coastal areas in large parts of southern Norway, from Østfold in the east to Helgeland in the west.
The number of Ixodes ricinus in Norway appears to be increasing, and there are also clear indications that ticks are establishing in new areas. This may be a contributing cause of the significant increase in the number of disease cases.
In addition, large numbers of ticks are brought to Norway by migratory birds. Normally, “foreign” tick species will die within a short time, as they are not adapted to the cold Norwegian climate. However, if the climate becomes warmer and more humid, this will allow new tick species to survive here. This poses a risk that we will also get new types of tick-borne bacteria and viruses.
At the Department of Natural Sciences, we research various aspects of “tick life”. We conduct extensive field and laboratory studies, including research on ticks, their activity (“behaviour”) in relation to climatic factors, and their distribution. We have developed/established molecular methods for the detection of microbes in ticks, humans and animals, and apply these in the study of the distribution of tick-borne microorganisms (including the bacteria Borrelia, Anaplasma, Neoerlichia, Rickettsia and Bartonella) and infections in humans and animals. Furthermore, we have established serological methods to detect antibodies against tick-borne bacteria and TBE-virus and apply these to study seroprevalence in animals. Furthermore, we assess the risk of disease after tick bites in pets.
The research group has extensive collaboration with other research environments both nationally and internationally – the challenges posed by ticks must be solved together, across disciplines and borders.
Please feel free to contact us if you wish to collaborate with us.
