Biodiversity
UiA has launched the BIOMANG initiative to preserve and promote biodiversity on Campus Kristiansand. This project, led by the Department of Natural Sciences and the Natural History Museum, aims to strengthen UiA's contribution to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals through concrete actions for biodiversity. BIOMANG seeks to promote biodiversity in both teaching and research, and position UiA as a green campus.
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms on Earth, including the variation within species, between species, and in ecosystems. It encompasses everything from microorganisms to plants and animals, and is essential for the stability of ecosystems, human health, and nature's ability to adapt to changes.
Why ensure biodiversity on campus?
Ensuring biodiversity on campus is important because it supports both teaching and research, contributes to a positive learning and working environment, and strengthens community engagement by involving the local population in conservation efforts. The campus areas serve as valuable outdoor classrooms and help to disseminate knowledge about nature. At the same time, a species-rich environment on campus is beneficial for health and well-being, and promotes UiA’s goals for sustainable development as part of the focus on the Green Transition.
