Bats

Work Package 3 - Biodiversity on campus

  1. General overview and status: Norway is home to 13 bat species, several of which are vulnerable. Bats hunt insects and need secure resting places.
  2. Basic needs: Bats require safe daytime roosts and hibernation areas, along with access to insects.
  3. Measures: Establish bat boxes, secure hollow trees, and create ponds to promote insect fauna.
  4. Monitoring the effects of measures: Utilise ultrasonic detectors to record bat activity and inspect bat boxes.

Implemented measures:

We have placed several bat boxes across both campuses. The boxes we've selected are special boxes suitable as daytime roosts for small bats, such as the common pipistrelle. This bat species has previously been observed at Campus Kristiansand. During the inspection of the boxes in Autumn 2025, bat droppings were found in two boxes at Campus Grimstad, as well as in one box at Campus Kristiansand. Additionally, a bat was observed in one of the boxes at Campus Grimstad.
