Prevent the spread of invasive species

Work package 7 - Biodiversity on campus

  1. General overview and status: Invasive species pose a major threat to biodiversity, with around 1,200 established invasive species in Norway.
  2. Basic needs: Prevent the spread of invasive species by controlling imports and monitoring existing species.
  3. Measures: Use native species in landscaping, combat established invasive species, and conduct regular surveys.
  4. Measuring the effects of measures: Monitor invasive species over time to assess the effectiveness of the measures.

Implemented measures:

Several attempts have been made to remove invasive species on the Kristiansand campus. Statsbygg has attempted to remove Japanese knotweed, sycamore maple, and rugosa roses in the past. In connection with the release of hawthorn, the Agder Botanical Association has attempted to remove invasive species. Sycamore maple has also been cleared around the hollow oak. The challenge remains that invasive species spread quickly and are difficult to eradicate.
