The Musical Dialogues Project mirrors the idea that music represents hope under challenging circumstances. We present music by composers who worked under difficult circumstances, composers who have created new music in remembrance of historical events or to remind us about promoters of humanitarian work. The questions that are raised in the Musical Dialogue research project is what happens with music and culture establishments and music educations institutions in conflict areas, and what role music plays for individuals and societies during political conflicts.

We are interested in the role art plays in the public sphere as a social and political context, where we focus on the mutual relations between art (music, theatre, visual arts, film, etc.) and conflict (social, ideological, economic, armed, etc.). This includes obvious conflicts, as well as those more or less overlooked or hidden. How do art works and artistic processes approach different kinds of conflict? What happens to artistic processes, art works, artists and art institutions in circumstances that are affected by violent conflict? How can aesthetic experiences and aesthetic forms play a dynamic role in dealing with complex and potentially conflicting social conditions? In addition, how does the art in itself become an object of conflict, stir up conflict or even inflict conflict under certain conditions? Finally, can art play a vital role when consensus orientation becomes socially or politically unproductive? Can artists and art educators be ‘dissensus-architects’ and create productive arenas for dissensus?

Videoproduksjonen Bach in the Zoo: Bach in the Subways Day 2015.

The video Bach in the Zoo was included in Bach in the Subways Day 2015, a world wide celebration of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach's 330th birthday on the 21st of March. Eleven music students from University of Agder dressed up in baroque costumes and played their music for animals in Kristiansand Dyrepark, Norway. The video includes sound clips of live recording in the zoo, as well as the participants' recordings in studio, photos by the photographer Anders Martinsen. The film maker Espen Oscar Olsen made ten video clips from five different locations. The technical production were made by Jan Helge Thomassen.
The video was presented on the 21st March 2015 at a Bach in the Subways 2015 Concert at the University of Agder, Kristiansand
