How to get a user account in Canvas

To have a role in Canvas, users need to have a Feide user account.

To create a Feide user account, you are required to have a contract with UiA, which can be an employment contract, temporary employment contract, hourly teaching contract, supervisor contract, or an 'affiliated with UiA' contract. ‘Affiliated with UiA’ is a contract type that allows for the creation of an account even if the individual concerned does not receive a salary from UiA.

The faculties have different procedures for how and who to contact, but a good tip is to first get in touch with the personnel officer at your faculty.

A Feide user account and contract ensure that the individual knows about and has signed UiA's IT security procedures and the confidentiality responsibilities that come with accessing personal data.

Access to Canvas provides insight into personal data (such as names, email addresses, submissions, assessments, plagiarism checks, etc.). The contract ensures that individuals sign a confidentiality agreement, and we know (and can document) who is in the system and what they have access to. Feide user accounts also grant access to, in addition to role-specific Canvas functionality, all integrations authenticated through Feide via Canvas, such as:

  • Kaltura – video
  • TP – timetable
  • Course Evaluation and Surveys (CES) – digital course evaluation
  • LibGuides – library resources
  • Leganto – reading lists
  • Ouriginal by Turnitin – plagiarism check
  • Office 365 – collaborative writing and file sharing

There will also be integrations specific to different subjects.

Lecturer

After acquiring their Feide user account, individuals preparing to teach must be registered as a subject expert in FS (‘Fagperson’) and be assigned a teaching role within the course they will be teaching (‘Undervisningsenhet’) in order to gain access to Canvas, which involves the creation of a Canvas user account.

The update process takes approximately one hour.

If you already have access to Canvas, the course coordinator can personally invite colleagues to the relevant course.

The student information system (FS)

The student adviser at the faculty/department you belong to is responsible for registering you as a subject expert in FS and assign roles on courses.

Administrative staff

As an administrative staff member, you are not registered in FS (the student information system), but a (Feide) user account in Canvas can be created for you when operationally necessary.

Contact person: Canvas Coordinator at the faculty.

External users

External users, like hourly teachers or examiners, must have a contract registered in the SAP payroll system. Contract forms are available at the faculties and in ServiceNow.

The registration in SAP is handled by the payroll office. The contract includes a confidentiality clause. After the contract is processed and registered in SAP, it is forwarded to the IT department, which provides a Feide user account. A student adviser at the department can then add the external user as a teaching assistant, for example, in a course within FS, which generates a Canvas user account and provides access to the course in question.

Students

Students need to approve their education plan in StudentWeb to be given access to Canvas and its courses. Access to courses in Canvas is granted 1-2 hours after the education plan is approved.
