Course: Student activities in Canvas

This course covers three of the many possible student activities that can be initiated in Canvas.

The purpose is to demonstrate ways to engage students through Canvas.

Participants can engage in student activities such as:

Start reading course material: students submit an assignment where they propose/create questions and possible answers - where the lecturer can select relevant questions/answer options from Speedgrader to create a Quiz in Canvas. This means that students MUST read the course material in order to complete the task, – thus, a way to encourage students to read the course material.

Peer assessment using graded discussions in groups: There is a separate feature for this in Canvas, but this approach offers a more open process where students can receive feedback collectively in the discussion, or separately in Speedgrader.

Create practice resources through a Quiz: Not all Quizzes need to be assessed; they can serve as practice resources for students without lecturer intervention. There are various question types that are unfamiliar to most, and there are also opportunities for providing automatic responses depending on the students’ answers.

Upon completing the course, participants should be able to:

  • set up an assignment, copy questions and answers from submitted assignments in Speedgrader to New Quizzes,
  • create a graded group discussion using the discussion tool as peer assessment and provide feedback collectively or individually to students,
  • develop practice resources for students in New Quizzes, with automatic feedback based on responses (and the use of Question Banks),
  • explore other options that Canvas tools offer to increase student engagement.
