Recruitment and admission

You can apply for admission to a PhD programme at UiA in two ways.

Option 1: Announced PhD fellowship position

Available PhD fellowship positions are always advertised and published under the vacancies section at UiA.

Option 2: Admission on alternative grounds

To be admitted on grounds other than an advertised PhD fellowship position, you must meet all the following conditions:

  • You must have a financial guarantee from your employer or organisation. This typically includes salary for three years, operational funding, a workspace, and supervision. The University of Agder does not accept private financial support (e.g., personal savings, financial support from family, or similar) as a basis for admission to PhD programmes.
  • You must meet the academic requirements for admission – including grade requirements and relevance of your field of study (Regulations).
  • Proficiency in Academic English: Most PhD programmes require demonstrated competence in academic English.
  • Residency requirement: Candidates are generally expected to spend a significant portion of their effective study period at the university.

Agreement on the implementation of the PhD programme

Individuals admitted to a PhD programme must enter into an agreement regarding the implementation of the programme.
