The purpose of the scheme is to provide students with knowledge and experience in research and innovation work by engaging them as research assistants in ongoing research and innovation projects. Participating students must show an interest in expanding their own knowledge and experience, and participation is not part of any ordinære study programmes. Students in Research and Innovation Projects is an internal support scheme at UiA aimed at encouraging more students to take an active role in research and innovation projects, and motivating more research and innovation projects to involve students.
The University Board has allocated NOK 1,000,000 for this purpose in 2026. The scheme is co-founded by the board and the Faculties.
What can you apply for?
- Support for establishing research and innovation projects led by a permanent academic staff or postdoctoral fellow at UiA, in which students with an active student status at UiA participate.
- An employee may only have one project at a time, which means that a new project cannot be approved until the previously funded project has been completed.
- Administrative staff cannot be project leaders.
- Innovation projects are defined as projects in which a novel idea, concept or method is developed, which has potential for commercial use or societal impact.
- Student projects' / masters' projects do not qualify for support, but students may develop (master's) projects within the thematic scope of the research or innovation project, and make use of that knowledge and empirical data in their (master's) project.
Where relevant, projects are encouraged to involve students from the Teacher Educations at UiA.
How much can be applied for?
Applicants may apply for up to NOK 20,000 per project, regardless of the number of students participating. The funds may be used to cover costs directly related to the student(s)’ activities within the project, such as wages, travel, conference participation, etc.
Application requirements
The application must be short and include the following::
- Project title and academic project leader
- Number of students planned to participate, with names if available
- A description of the tasks the student(s) will undertake in the project and the costs to be covered
- A brief budget
Deadline: Projects are approved on a rolling basis. The final deadline for the current year is 1 October.
What are the students' responsibilities?
Each student must, as soon as possible after project completion, submit a short blog post. The post must describe the tasks the student participated in and what they learned by participating in the project. The final deadline for publishing the blog post is 10 December. Funds will not be disbursed if the blog post is missing.
What are the faculty’s responsibilities?
- The faculty must ensure that students receive an hourly wage contract. We recommend that faculties use LR02, pay grade 22–25, alternative 3, depending on the student’s seniority, in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreements (Hovedtariffavtalene) for the Norwegian state.
- The faculty must submit one internal invoice covering all its projects by 31 December. The invoice must include the project title and project leader. Failure to invoice within the deadline will result in the support not being paid.
- Allocated funds that are not used for the intended purposes will be withdrawn.
