The professor programme

The professor programme at UiA is a training programme for those aspiring to become professors. The goal of the programme is academic development work aimed at qualifying for promotion to professor.

  • Duration: Two years.
  • Eligibility: Associate professors at UiA.
  • Nomination: Participants are nominated by their faculties.
  • Criteria: Candidates should have completed their doctorate within the last five years.
  • Research Activity: Must be engaged in new research work and have publications beyond their doctoral dissertation.

Who can participate?

The programme is for associate professors at UiA. Faculty deans register candidates for the programme by contacting Gerd Reidun Helmikstøl. In doing this, the faculty is also obliged to adapt the candidate’s working conditions so that participation is possible, and to cover any extra costs that result from their participation.

While the selection of candidates is ultimately driven by faculties’ priorities and needs, the scheme will be particularly relevant to staff members who have completed their PhD in the last five years. The maximum number of participants is 24.

Conditions for participation

Participants in the professor programme are expected to have a minimum of 30% research time set aside in their work schedule during both of years of the programme, and a total of 80 hours must also be set aside for participation in meetings and supervision.

It is also expected that the faculty covers expenses for a mentor for each candidate from the faculty corresponding to a total of 20 hours, as well as costs related to the research workshops (accommodation/meals/travel for participants as well as costs for speakers).

Course themes

The role of a professor: this includes forward thinking and leading in a field, guiding and mentoring others, developing research projects and research groups, discovering talents and seeing opportunities for professional development, etc.

Academic culture: differences and tensions between professional environments vs. academic environments, informal and formal power and authority, learning to read and manoeuvre in academic spaces.

Research profile – depth and breadth: participants will write a professional academic biography, beginning this task early as an ongoing document to be revised during the qualification course. Rather than just a list of publications and projects, it should seek to reflect the candidates’ ongoing reflection on research qualifications; foster awareness about research areas which may be delineated in different ways, theoretically and implementation in practice; and help participants to identify and articulate two or three areas of research expertise.

Academic genres and academic writing: explore the writing styles found in various disciplines with regard to publishing language, books vs. articles, multiple authors vs. sole authors etc. Learn to be explicit and conscious of how one should publish, how to ensure variation in publishing, and how writing and dissemination function as tools for clearer thinking.

Academic impact: learn about the various forms of impact or social benefit, the relationship between commissioned research, applied research, basic research, and development in academic, professional and service arenas.

Academic leadership: building a research group, recruiting, inspiring and guiding others, the role of a mentor. Being a professor is not an individual career but an institutional commitment.

Once you have completed the programme you will be better qualified to apply for promotion.

Structure

Individual preliminary meetings with the head of department: Clarification of wishes for the programme and goals for the programme period – both on the part of the department and on the part of the participant. The conversation is summarized in an individual qualification plan for the programme period.

Research workshops: Two-day sessions organized each semester. The focus of these workshops will be based on the course themes noted here.

Individual guidance: Each participant is assigned a mentor who will act as a dialogue partner throughout the programme. The content of the guidance is based on the individual qualification plans that are drawn up together with the head of department. The contents of supervisory meetings should preferably be based on a written text (article draft, application draft, etc.) which is sent to the mentor in advance of the supervision meeting.

Working groups: At the first research workshop, the participants are divided into groups of work partners of 2-3 people. These groups meet once a month throughout the programme, give feedback on each other's work, and act as a link between research workshops.
