Procedure and requirements for promotion from assistant professor (universitetslektor) to associate professor (førsteamanuensis) is regulated by UiA’s Qualification requirements for employment, transition and promotion in teaching and research positions.
The Regulations to the Universities and University Colleges Act, Section 3-13, govern the eligibility to apply for promotion, and Section 3-14 regulates the assessment and decision-making process for promotion.

Promotion to associate professor (førsteamanuensis) may be granted based on a doctoral degree, or competence at an equivalent level documented either by scientific or artistic work of the same scope and quality.
Promotion based on a doctoral degree
When applying for promotion based on a doctoral degree, the application should be submitted to the HR-advisor at the faculty. The Dean will assess and approve the application in accordance with UiA’s qualification requirements.
The promotion is granted administratively by UiA without evaluation by an expert committee.
Promotion based on competence equivalent to a doctoral degree
When applying for promotion based on competence equivalent to a doctoral degree, documented either by scientific or artistic work of the same scope and quality, the application must be submitted via JobbNorge. There is no institutional application deadline. Applications are processed on an ongoing basis according to the date of submission. An application for promotion can only be submitted at your own faculty and within the subject area where the applicant is employed. It should be taken into consideration for the development of the subject area of the position from the original job description and up to the time of application. If there have been significant changes to your position since the job posting, we recommend that you contact the Division of Human Resources for clarification regarding your academic field.
UiA’s Appointment Committee for teaching and research positions grant promotion based on a recommendation from the appointing authority, which is founded on the assessment provided by the expert committee.
A promotion will take effect from the date the application is received by the Division of Human Resources. Promotion based on qualifications is personal and entitles the individual to the salary and title of associate professor (førsteamanuensis). The promotion does not entail any changes to work duties.
In connection with promotion to the position of associate professor (førsteamanuensis), a salary increase of 6 % is normally granted. The effective date of the salary adjustment is set as the date on which the application is submitted.
