Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should have strengthen their knowledge and skills in following areas:
  • analysis and evaluation of fiction texts for children and young adults
  • analysis and evaluation of non-fiction texts for children and young adults
  • application of textual theory to children's and young adults' literature
  • reading promotion
  • dissemination of literature, and pedagogical work in schools and libraries

General description and profile of the programme

The programme gives an introduction to literature for children and young adults and to reading promotion and the dissemination of literature. Focus will be on recent literature, including both fiction and non-fiction texts. The programme also covers films for children and young adults.

Teaching and learning methods

Most of the teaching will be taken as Internet-based distance learning, and it may therefore be taken regardless of residence. Two optional common meetings will be arranged in Kristiansand. There is no separate tuition fee, apart from the regular fee.

Assessment methods

Assessment forms include at-home examination and written examination.

Internationalisation

All courses in School Library Science have some international prescribed texts. This is mostly Nordic in School Library Science 1 and 2, and mostly American in School Library Science 3. Sweden and the US are leading countries in the field, and they are included as examples in lectures and literature.

The language of teaching is Norwegian.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

The programme aims to give the necessary professional basis for work as a school librarian in primary and lower secondary school. It may also provide useful general knowledge for teachers and librarians who wish to increase their knowledge of literature for children and young adults. The programme may be an integral part of various other bachelor programmes and in a self-made bachelor's degree. The programme is a free-standing programme, but may also be taken in conjunction with School Library Studies 1 and School Library Studies 3.
These three studies constitute the major subject in the Bachelor's Programme in School Library Studies.

Student evaluations

The study programme evaluation is completed as a mid-term evaluation in a session in Kristiansand.
