Study trips and the possibility to spend a longer period abroad are considered an important part of the programme. The first year of study usually offers a study trip. Religious Studies in Asia (a separate programme description is found on uia.no) may be included as a 30 credit course combination. (See also the below paragraph on student exchange).

The specialization module of the bachelor programme consists of 90 ECTS credits in religion and ethics, six courses on level 1, and three courses on level 2, one of which is the bachelor's thesis.

The third and final year, the minor (60 credits): The students may choose from a variety of relevant studies or course combinations. Choose a one-year study programme (60 credits), two 30 credit course combinations, or one 30 credit course combination and 30 credits free standing courses.

Teaching and learning methods

Emphasis is put on the fact that students are to meet a variation of teaching methods throughout the study. Teaching is given as lectures, seminars, discussions and individual studies, as well as supervision in connection with the bachelor¿s thesis.

Study trips and excursions are arranged.

Practice periods are included for students in the teacher education.

Assessment methods

Forms of assessment vary: Term papers, written examinations and oral examinations. The forms of assessment are, to the largest possible degree, adapted to comply with the overall goal of providing possibilities for the students to practice critical reflection and discussion. See each course description for further information.

Internationalisation

Parts of the program have an international perspective and convey knowledge and understanding of the place of religions in the world and through history. The program explores global challenges and the relationship between different religions and cultures. Some of the prescribed texts are in English, and Religious radicalization, extremism and violence (REL206) is taught in English if inbound exchange students register for the course.

The program structure lets our students study abroad for one or two terms. We offer Religious Studies in Asia (30 credits) as one of our options for student exchange.

Requirements for continuing in the study programme

Students must have successfully completed courses of 40 ECTS credits in Religion, Ethics and Society (or the equivalent) to be allowed to register for REL203, the Bachelor's thesis.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

A Bachelor's Degree in Religion, Ethics and Society will be a sound foundation for work that requires critical and independent reflection. This includes jobs within the fields of education, culture, publishing and journalism. The programme may also be included in a course of study which provides teaching qualifications and the opportunity to work as a teacher in lower secondary school, upper secondary school and in adult education.

The programme qualifies for admission to the Master's Programme in Religion, Philosophy and Society, which again qualifies for admission to the PhD-specialization in Religion, Ethics and Society.
