The PhD Candidate’s ABC

  • Absence (sick leave, self-certification, statutory absences): All absence must be registered/applied for by the candidate in DFØ. Absences covered by law or collective agreement may entitle you to an extension of your PhD admission. Remember to submit a sick note or apply for leave. UiA asks that you use electronic sick notes.

  • Career: For questions about jobs after the PhD, contact UiA’s Career Centre.
  • Courses (internal, credit-bearing PhD courses): The PhD adviser will email all candidates as courses are scheduled. Which courses you should take must be agreed with your supervisor and the PhD specialisation leader. As part of continuous improvement, we ask PhD candidates to evaluate courses immediately after they finish. Participants will receive an email about this.
  • Courses (internal, non-credit-bearing): PULS — the Library.
  • Courses (external, credit-bearing PhD courses): Courses offered by other universities and colleges, or by research schools, can in some cases be included in your training component. Which courses you should take must be agreed with your supervisor and the PhD specialisation leader. If in doubt about whether they may be included in your training component, you should apply for prior approval.
