Global Development, Crisis and Change (Master)

My wish was to learn, understand and participate in the refugee and immigrant integration system in Norway.

A Meaningful Role at NAV

Since April 2023, Robby has been working in the department of refugees at NAV Kongsvinger. He combines two roles - refugee consultant and programme advisor. Like many job seekers, he used several official channels to apply for jobs in Norway. He got his current job as a special consultant through a standard application process online.

His daily work involves coordinating individual and adapted integration plans, offering guidance and ensuring each participant has access to the resources and opportunities they need.

- We follow refugees from their resettlement, throughout the integration program, and even after the program until they have completed five years in the municipality.

A Journey from DR Congo to Norway

Robby’s educational background began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Rural Economy. The programme focused on understanding the social, economic and environmental issues that shape rural development.

When he moved to Norway in 2016, his curiosity about integration and social inclusion led him to UiA and Global Development.

- My wish was to learn, understand, and participate in the refugee and immigrant integration system in Norway. I wanted to understand why some succeed while others struggle.

Bridging Academic Research and Real-World Impact

During his studies at UiA, Robby’s academic interests aligned well with his professional ambitions. His master’s thesis focused on refugee experiences after the introduction programme in Kristiansand, exploring the factors that hinder access to employment and full participation in society.

- My research on refugee integration in Norway is a concrete example of how my education has been directly useful in my current job.

He explains that the Master’s programme in Global Development helped him combine local understanding from his earlier studies with a global perspective on development and policy.

Education that Equips You for Change

Robby highlights the relevance of his education to his current role and encourages future students to consider the Master’s in Global Development for its practical application.

- This programme prepares students to address social, economic, environmental and political challenges – and to find sustainable solutions.

He believes the programme is especially suited for open-minded students who are eager to understand complex global issues and work positive change.

Advice for Students

For those considering a Master’s degree at UiA, Robby’s advice is simple but strategic:

- Choose a relevant topic and get actively involved when writing your thesis – that is key for your future.
