Piano Teacher and Musician

Today, Sivert works as a piano teacher at Alver Kulturskole and runs private lessons through Litlebergen Piano School together with his wife, who is also a pianist.

In addition, he takes on assignments as a pianist and choir conductor. Recently, he was also instated as the new leader of Musikkpedagogene Norge – an interest organization for Norwegian vocal and instrumental teachers.

Built His Career While Studying

Sivert entered working life through traditional application processes but believes that the work experience he gained during his studies gave him an advantage.

- I think I’ve been lucky that the transition from studies to working life went relatively smoothly. That’s probably because I worked a lot as a culture school teacher while studying.

Even though the transition between studies and work went smoothly, Sivert noticed one clear difference: the time available for personal practice.

- Something I noticed after finishing my studies is that there’s much less time to practice. You should make good use of your study years to build a strong repertoire.

A Passion for Classical Music

It was his passion for classical music that led Sivert to study music performance.

- I wanted to work with classical music, and I felt that I had something within me that I could cultivate and make a living from.

He highlights his education as a crucial foundation for the work he does today.

- The entire basis for being a musician and instrumental teacher lies in having time to master your relationship with your instrument.

A Strong Environment for Growth

Sivert recommends studying at UiA to anyone considering a career in classical music.

- You’ll have great facilities, fantastic teachers, and a good environment – everything you need to work with and cultivate the music you’re passionate about.

He also emphasizes that the relationships with the professors at UiA left a lasting impression. The positive connection between professors and students throughout the program has shaped his own ideals for how knowledge and music should be passed on.

Advice for Students

To current and future students, Sivert has a clear piece of advice:

- Start working early, and play or practice as much as you can while you still have it in you!
