How to apply for individual accommodations

Here you can find information on how to apply for accommodations in teaching, learning materials, and physical accessibility.

Who can apply and what can you apply for?

You can apply for individual accommodations if you have needs that affect your studies, for example due to:

  • Disability
  • Other specific needs
  • Pregnancy or childcare responsibilities

You can apply for accommodations in:

  • Teaching
  • Learning materials
  • Physical accessibility

You can apply for one, two, or all three types in the same application.

How is the application assessed?

The following are considered when applications are assessed:

  • Your needs and supporting documentation
  • Your study situation
  • The academic requirements of your programme

Accommodations are intended to improve your study situation, but cannot reduce academic requirements or lower learning outcomes.

Other factors that may also be considered:

  • The expected effectiveness of the accommodation
  • Costs and available resources at UiA

Applications are processed in accordance with applicable laws:

  • Universities and University Colleges Act, see especially §§ 10-5 and 10-6
  • Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act, see especially §§ 21 and 23
  • Public Administration Act
  • Regulations on studies and examinations at UiA

How to apply and who processes the application

The application must:

  • Describe your needs
  • Explain which measures you believe would help
  • Include relevant documentation

The documentation must show how your needs affect your daily studies and be valid for the period you are applying for.

UiA provides a specific documentation form that can be used, but you are free to submit documentation in another format. Click here to access the form.

You can apply for accommodations:

  • For one semester
  • For the entire study programme

If you later start a new programme and still require accommodations, you must submit a new application. This also applies when transitioning from a bachelor’s to a master’s programme.

Processing of the application

  • Accommodations in teaching and learning materials are processed by your faculty.
  • Accommodations in physical accessibility are processed by UiA Accessibility Service

If the application covers multiple areas, two separate decisions may be issued.

Outcomes, appeals, and guidance

You will receive a decision on your application, which may be:

  • Approved
  • Partially approved
  • Denied

Applications are normally processed within three weeks. You will be notified if there are delays or if the expected processing time changes.

Decisions are sent via digital mailbox or by post.

If you disagree with the decision, you can appeal. Information on the appeal deadline and procedure is included with the decision.
