This work includes documenting and highlighting attacks on higher education, promoting solidarity, and providing assistance and protection to individuals.
Each year, UiA offers temporary placements for 2–3 SAR researchers.

SAR-Norway and UiA
The Norwegian section of SAR (SAR-Norway) was established in 2011, and the University of Agder currently holds the chairmanship. Local institutional work is managed by an institutional contact and a local SAR group, which, in addition to the institutional contact, consists of 4–5 academic staff members. The main task of the SAR group is to select candidates who can be offered a guest stay at UiA.
Inviting guest researchers
The University Board at UiA allocates funds to invite guest researchers (SAR scholars). Since welcoming our first SAR scholar in 2012, UiA has hosted 11 scholars from 8 different countries (as of February 2024), most for two-year placements. The researchers have diverse academic backgrounds and have been placed across five different faculties. The departments show great willingness to contribute to this initiative and provide excellent support as hosts for the guest researchers.
Increasing demand for protection
In recent years, SAR has experienced a significant increase in applications from scholars seeking protection. The war in Syria and the political situation in Turkey led to record numbers from those countries, but research and teaching are increasingly risky in many other regions as well. New visa regulations in the USA, political changes in Eastern and Central Europe, conflicts in parts of Africa, and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have added extra responsibility to the European sections, making Scholars at Risk more relevant and important than ever.
Local SAR work at UiA
At UiA, local SAR activities are led by an institutional contact and a local SAR group. One of the group’s main tasks is to recruit new candidates to be offered temporary guest placements at the university.
