In the government's proposal for the 2026 national budget, the University of Agder (UiA) is allocated NOK 1.99 billion. When adjusting for inflation, this represents an increase of 0.2% from 2025.
"This budget offers stability but leaves little room for new initiatives. We receive rewards for good results, which mitigates the impact of the general cuts in the sector," says University Director Seunn Smith Tønnessen.
30 student places for psychology
As announced in August this year, UiA is receiving 30 student places to establish a professional degree programme in psychology as part of the 2026 budget.
Efforts are underway to prepare for semester start, autumn 2026. The plan is to launch the programme in August 2026.
"This is really great. However, there's still a strong need for more funding during the establishment phase. UiA is concentrating its effort, working closely with the entire region," says Smith-Tønnessen.
UiA will also receive five new student places for workplace-based kindergarten teacher education.
UiA is rewarded for good results
The government continues to cut funding in the sector to free up resources for reallocations, resulting in a higher percentage of cuts across the sector this year. For UiA, this equates to NOK 15.5 million.
UiA performs well across all indicators determining allocation size, with a relatively high number of students and PhD candidates completing their courses.
"Along with the new student places, this helps to mitigate the impacts of cuts in other areas," says Smith-Tønnessen.
