Summary of thesis

In this dissertation, I explore how digital media and tools can be used in creative and relational processes within the subject of Art and Crafts in primary school. The research is grounded in an a/r/tographic methodology (Irwin et al., 2006), in which I, as researcher, move between artistic, pedagogical, and scholarly positions.

My research highlights that when children encounter the digital in open and exploratory ways, technology can be experienced as malleable, embodied, and relational. Through a series of workshops, first-grade pupils used tablets to explore, create, and investigate together, inspired by contemporary art.

The dissertation also illuminates how the teacher’s role is challenged and expanded when digital media and tools are introduced in Art and Crafts education. At the same time, the subject provides a space for posing critical questions about the role of technology in schools. The digital can both open and constrain, and my dissertation contributes new perspectives on how technology can be approached with critical awareness and reflection.
