Bang has previously taught at the department for many years and has been a key figure in building UiA's electronic music community. He now returns to the core of teaching after a period of extensive international artistic activity.
International profile and a broad network
Jan Bang is one of Norway's most prominent composers, musicians and producers with a wide international reach. He has collaborated with leading artists across genres, including Sidsel Endresen, David Sylvian, Jon Hassell, Nils Petter Molvær, Arild Andersen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Arve Henriksen, Eivind Aarset and Sly & Robbie. Bang is also artistic director of the Punkt Festival together with Erik Honoré, and is recognised as a clear innovator at the intersection of live electronics and improvisation.
In recent years he has also been heavily involved in international collaboration through CreaTeME International — a meeting place where UiA students, visiting institutions and international artists come together in seminars and workshops.
The student at the centre
"I am looking forward to teaching more again. For me, it is about putting the student at the centre: listening carefully to what they are trying to achieve, understanding their project, and working together to develop it further," says Jan Bang.
A leading European academic community
The Master's Degree in Electronic Music at UiA is a performance-based master's programme in which students are guided in discovering and realising artistic ideas through music technology. The programme emphasises personal expression, aesthetic awareness, critical reflection and professional development.
"Jan Bang has been absolutely instrumental in building the electronic music community at UiA. His return strengthens both the programme and our international standing. The Department of Popular Music is the leading academic environment for popular music in Norway, and we have built a particularly strong position within electronic music and the creative use of music technology — UiA is today regarded as one of the most prominent environments in Europe," says department head Erik Gunvaldsen.
