Chamber Music Competition at UiA 2026

The chamber music festival at UiA is organized as a series of chamber music concerts which form a integral part of every classical music students’ semester plan. However, since my first year, I have considered that this period could offer more than performance opportunities alone.

Based on this perspective, I proposed the introduction of a competitive element to the festival, an idea I discussed with Cordula Hacke, our chamber music professor. This concept was inspired by my previous experience at the Conservatorio de Tatuí, where the chamber music festival is also structured as a competition. After making several adjustments to adapt the model to the UiA context, we were able to successfully implement this initiative.

The primary objective of the competition was to enhance student engagement and motivation in chamber music activities. Additionally, it aimed to create a structured environment in which students could receive constructive feedback from a jury. Such feedback is of significant pedagogical value, as it helps participants identify areas for improvement and informs their future practice and performance.

Although the initial proposal did not include prizes, these were later incorporated with Cordula’s support. The introduction of awards contributed positively to student motivation and overall enthusiasm for the event.

Feedback collected after the competition was highly positive. Students reported increased engagement in both ensemble rehearsals and individual practice. Furthermore, there was a noticeable rise in attendance at peers’ performances, indicating a strengthened sense of community and mutual support.

An additional feature of the event was the inclusion of public voting for the “favorite of the night.” This element proved to be both engaging and effective in encouraging students to invite a broader audience to the concerts.

In conclusion, the implementation of the chamber music contest was successful and well received by the student body. The outcomes suggest that this format has strong potential for continued development, and there are plans to refine and repeat the initiative in future semesters.
