  In Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya’s memoirs there is a rather ambiguous story about how she came to understand trigonometric functions on her own as a teenager by reading the chapter on optics in Tyrtov’s elementary physics textbook. Furthermore, she claims that in so doing, she happened to follow ‘the same road that had been taken historically: that is, instead of a sine I used a chord’. We examine Tyrtov’s textbook in search of sources for such inspiration and quote hitherto unknown critical reactions to her autobiographical reflections by Kovalevskaya’s teacher I I Malevich. We conclude that Kovalevskaya’s memoirs may well be marred by personal interests and/or faltering memory. By adding new sources about Kovalevskaya’s early mathematical education and by critiquing some previously published reactions to the sine anecdote, we hope to contribute some nuances to the biographical literature on this world-famous pioneering female professor of mathematics.

  The biographical literature on Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya has to a large extent relied on her own memoirs, published in Vestnik Evropyonly months before her death, and an autobiographical story published posthumously in Russkaya Starina. In this paper we present and discuss the full Russian text with English translation of a letter, previously unpublished, from Kovalevskaya’s teacher in childhood and adolescence, Iosif Ignatyevich Malevich, to the editor of Russkaya Starina, MikhailIvanovich Semevsky, in which he repudiates her depreciation of his role in her schooling, criticizes her self-portrayal, and provides information about her early education which runs counter to parts of the biographical literature on Kovalevskaya.

  Operation and maintenance play an important role in maximizing the yield and minimizing the downtime of wind turbines, especially offshore wind farms where access can be difficult due to harsh weather conditions for long periods. It contributes up to 25–30% to the cost of energy generation. Improved operation and maintenance (O&M) practices are likely to reduce the cost of wind energy and increase safety. In order to optimize the O&M, the importance of data exchange and knowledge sharing within the offshore wind industry must be realized. With more data available, it is possible to make better decisions, and thereby improve the recovery rates and reduce the operational costs. This article describes the development of a framework for data integration to optimize the remote operations of offshore wind farms.

  Racial and political persecution of German-speaking scholars from 1933 onward has already been extensively studied. The archives of the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL), which are deposited in the Western Manuscripts Collection at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, is a rich source of information about the emigration of European scientists, also those who did not come from German-speaking institutions. This is an account of the support given by the SPSL to the persecuted mathematicians among them. The challenges faced by these emigrants included, in addition to anti-Semitism and xenophobia in their countries both of origin and of destination, the restricted financial means of the SPSL, and the sometimes arbitrary assessment of academic merits.

  Nowadays, wind energy is one of the most recognized renewable energy sources. Onshore wind farms have been built in many countries, such as Denmark, Norway, UK, Italy, Brazil and the US. To utilize the more stable wind resources, wind farms have moved off the shore, first to shallow waters near shore and now extending to deeper waters and far off the shore. Deep-water offshore solutions will give access to large areas with high wind, and less sensitivity to noise, visual impacts and size. However, the cost of developing and operating an offshore wind farm is many times larger than onshore due to large water depths and harsh offshore environments. Hence, the needs for fast and automatic data exchange in offshore wind industry are required more than ever. A smart grid is one of the technologies which will help the wind industry to effectively use wind power plants and reduce cost of operation and maintenance. The aim of this work is to develop a flexible information model for offshore smart grids, which can keep pace with the current rapid development of wind turbine technology. In this work, we choose the existing IEC 61400-25 standard as a starting point for developing an information model for offshore wind smart grid communication.

  Operation and maintenance play an important role in extracting power from the wind, especially, in offshore wind energy where wind farms are located far off the shore and under harsh weather conditions. Improved operation and maintenance is likely to reduce costs as well as hazard exposure of the employees. Implementation of advanced information technology is thus crucial for operating offshore wind farms effectively and efficiently and hence improves operation and maintenance. However, information availability and reliability are key issues for their use in the offshore wind domain. This paper describes the development of a semantic model for offshore wind data integration in order to facilitate date exchange and enable knowledge sharing between concerned partners.

  Das einst in der Universalgeschichtsschreibung vorherrschende Klischee vom 'dunklen Mittelalter' ist mittlerweile nicht zuletzt durch mathematikhistorische Arbeiten über die arabisch-islamische Mathematik weitgehend überwunden. Bereits im historischen Vorfeld der Renaissance wurden von den Arabern das indische dezimale Positionssystems und Teile der antiken griechischen Wissenschaft nach Europa gebracht. Die Rezeption erfolgte dann weitgehend unter Vermittlung lateinischer Texte im christlich dominierten europäischen Mittelalter. Der jeweilige Zeitpunkt der Christianisierung und die schrittweise Entwicklung der das lateinische Alphabet benutzenden Nationalsprachen bestimmten jenen Wahrnehmungsprozess maßgeblich. Fast nichts findet man in der Literatur über frühe Mathematik in Nordeuropa, insbesondere in Norwegen. Ganz besonders gilt das für die vorchristliche Zeit - bekanntlich sind die norwegischen Wikinger, die seit etwa 800 das Gebiet des heutigen Norwegen beherrschten, unter den beiden Olafs (Olaf Trygvasson und Olaf der Heilige) erst Anfang des 11. Jahrhunderts zum Christentum übergetreten. Seit Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts bis 1814 wurde Norwegen weitgehend von Dänemark beherrscht, und die alte norwegische Sprache (Norrøn) wurde von der dänischen stark beeinflusst. In diesem Artikel möchten wir einige Quellen und Sekundärliteratur vorstellen, die etwas über die Anfänge norwegischer Mathematik aussagen können.

  A propositional framework of formal reasoning is proposed, which emphasises the pattern of entering and exiting context. Contexts are modelled by an algebraic structure which reflects the order and manner in which context is entered into and exited from.; The equations of the algebra partitions context terms into equivalence classes. A formal semantics is defined, containing models that map equivalence classes of certain context terms to sets of interpretations of the formula language. The corresponding Hilbert system incorporates the algebraic equations as axioms asserted in context.; In semigroups of contexts, where combination of contexts is associative, finite ground algebraic equations correspond to contingent equivalence between certain logical formulas. Systems for sets and multisets of contexts are obtained by presenting their respective algebras as associativity plus finite ground equations. Soundness and completeness results are proved.; Some contextual reasoning systems in the literature are inherently associative, and we present those as special cases.

  Johannes Lohne (1908-1993) arbeidet som fysikk- og matematikklærer, først i Odda og etter krigen i sin fødeby Flekkefjord. Selv om han ikke hadde doktorgrad, ble han en av sin tids mest betydelige vitenskapshistorikere. Hans forskning bidro for eksempel til at den engelske matematikeren og fysikeren Thomas Harriot nå ofte blir betegnet som «Englands Galileo». Denne boken beskriver Lohnes liv og en del av hans forskningsresultater, som åpner nye perspektiver på noen av det 17. århundres store vitenskapsmenn som Harriot, Kepler, Hooke og Newton. I tillegg går boken inn på spørsmålet om i hvilken grad Lohnes virksomhet som forsker i etterkrigstiden, og hans ettermæle i våre dager, ble påvirket av hans innsats som frontkjemper under krigen og av domfellelsen i landssvikoppgjøret og fengselsoppholdet fra 1945 til 1948.

  Following the Nazi takeover in 1933, aid organizations for academic refugees from Germany appeared in many countries. In Britain, the Academic Assistance Council, later reorganized as the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL), was set up to cater for all branches of science and the humanities, and to assist refugees regardless of the reasons for their persecution, whether political or racial. Academic excellence was the main criterion for support from the SPSL. Other organizations, some of them British, were more limited in scope, but may have been less insistent on academic merit. The SPSL meticulously recorded all of its activities, and its archives are today accessible at the Bodleian library in Oxford. Of the 2,541 individuals on file with the SPSL during 1933-1945, 96 were mathematicians, of which 63 were from Germany and the rest from other European countries. The support rendered by the SPSL ranged from essentially nothing up to direct financial contribution to relocation and re-establishment in a British university, and letters of support for naturalization as a British citizen. Contact with other aid organizations was frequently mediated, in particular with the US Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars, which helped resettle many European mathematicians in America. Today, the SPSL has evolved into the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA, http://www.academic-refugees.org/), which continues to assist academics unable to pursue their research in their countries of origin because of conflict or persecution.

  We study scientific migration and patronage before and during the Second World War in the case of the student Oscar Buneman (1913-93), an eminent scientist later on. Our main source is the archive of the SPSL. For those interested in Buneman, these records are important because they contain information not available elsewhere, for other historians because Buneman belonged to a minority, not well known and not investigated much: non-Jewish and non-communist, anti-Nazi active before and after emigration like Willy Brandt (1913-92) and others, but mainly interested in mathematics and its applications, not politics.

  Notatet gir en fullstendig løsning av et kombinatorisk problem, som eksempel på en type problemløsning som ikke tidligere har vært undervist på studiet i informatikk og matematiske metoder, men som vil bli undervist fra V01 i kurset INF2490. Det vises først hvordan et rekursivt program for problemet gir opphav til en genererende funksjon for løsningen. Deretter utledes en eksplisitt og effektiv formel for løsningen ved delbrøksoppspaltning. Til slutt vises det hvordan den genererende funksjonen kan utledes også uten tilgang til det rekursive programmet.
