Hedgehogs

Work package 4 - Biodiversity on campus

  1. General overview and status: Hedgehogs are near-threatened in Norway. They are nocturnal and have specific needs for food, water, and nesting sites.
  2. Basic needs: Hedgehogs require food, water, nesting materials, and safe places for hibernation.
  3. Measures: Preserve and increase natural vegetation, establish hedgehog houses, and reduce open lawn areas.
  4. Monitoring the effects of measures: Conduct annual hedgehog counts and monitor their use of habitats.

Implemented measures

Hedgehogs have been observed on Campus Kristiansand. To better care for them, hedgehog boxes have been placed on campus. These boxes, made by the Zoological Association of Agder, can serve as suitable summer homes for hedgehogs.
