The employer’s activity duty and duty to issue a statement
As a part of the efforts to reduce the gender differences in work life, the Equality and Ant-Discrimination Act was amended in in 2020. The act specifies the employer’s activity duty and duty to issue a statement (ARP), and instructs all employers to make active, targeted and systematic efforts to promote equality and prevent discrimination in their undertakings in all areas, e.g. ethnicity, religion, sexual preferences etc. As an employer, you are also obliged to carry out an annual survey of both salaries and involuntary part-time work.
Diversity management
Equality cannot be achieved by counting the number of women or nationalities in an undertaking. The key to equality is an organisational culture that promotes diversity as a resource. Diversity management is about how you as a leader manage the diversity in your workplace. There are already a number of studies that discusses the significance of diversity, and it has been demonstrated that diversity promotes innovation, improves decision processes, increases productivity and provides better risk management.
Persons with disabilities
Today, more than 70% of the population between 15 and 74 years are active workers. This can be compared with the percentage of active workers among persons with disabilities, which is 41. To many with disabilities, work-life accommodations will be a decisive factor in deciding whether they are able to continue as active workers. Both the Working Environment Act and the National Insurance Act includes several provisions relating to the employer’s duty of follow-up and accommodation. In addition, the main aim of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy equal rights to recognised human rights and basic liberties, as well as to dismantle any obstacles to this.
