The statement on the politics of equality 2020 stated that the gender-divided labour market has consequences for gender differences in relation to wages, working conditions, work time, career development and inequality. To the individual, expectations concerning what is an appropriate education and profession could limit the choice of education and career. At the societal level, such expectations may impact the need for manpower.
The UngIDag – committee supports the statement and argues that gender-segregated choices of education to a high degree contribute to maintaining the existing gender segregation in the labour market and prevent recruitment to occupations, industries and sectors. A mere 15 per cent of all employees work in occupations marked by gender balance. A considerable part of gender segregation in the labour market is caused by young people’s choice of education. This applies especially to the choice of vocational subjects. In the coming years, the centre for equality aims to expand its efforts in the field of gender-segregated choices of education and profession.
Courses
At present, the Centre for Gender and Equality offers the course Gender-segregated Choices of Education, which is a knowledge-based course directed especially towards career counsellors and teachers in the subject Choice of Education. The purpose of the course is that participants from different schools, grades and municipalities shall come together to exchange experiences and ideas on this theme. Also, the participants will acquire knowledge and reflections which increase their ability to identify gender roles and how these impact education choices, and make them more capable of supporting the pupils in making free and independent choices.
Projects
Together with the KUN Centre for Equality and Diversity, we in the Centre for Gender and Equality are working on the project ‘Greater diversity – freer choices; measures for a gender perspective in career and education counselling’ (September 2021 – November 2022). With its focus on three regions within Agder, Viken and Trøndelag, the project contributes to a less gender-segregated labour market by making young people take more conscious and knowledge-based choices of education. The project is a cooperation between the Centre for Gender and Equality, KUN Centre for Equality and Diversity, Reform – Resource Centre for Men and The Centre for Equality in Hamar.
MA scholarships
We announce scholarships to UiA students who will write their theses on themes related to equality and diversity. We need more knowledge about gender segregated choices of education, and therefore wish that more students write their theses within this research area. Read more about MA – scholarships here.
