The chapter examines how cultural memories of World War ii and the implied collective identities have been performed, (re)enacted, and negotiated by recent Norwegian film, tv, and theater productions. By applying a descriptive approach that aims at understanding, not judging, the collective memory dynamics, the aim is to exemplify and shed light on ongoing dynamics in Norwegian memory culture, as well as to further develop and discuss the issue of aesthetic agency in collective mnemonic processes.

This chapter explores theatrical approaches to the Norwegian terror attacks of July 22, 2011, by focusing on the intersection of medium specificity, spatial politics, and the contested cultural memory processes in the public sphere. Institutional theaters in Norway only hesitantly approached the issue during the first years after the attacks, by dealing with July 22 merely indirectly or implicitly. The article traces and discusses these early theatrical approaches before zooming in to the first performance produced by a Norwegian institutional theater that explicitly dealt with July 22: Ein av oss/Einer von uns (Ulfsby, 2019). By analyzing the dramaturgical and aesthetic strategies of this production through the lens of transnational memory perspectives, the article provides a close reading of the performance as a multidirectional mnemonic laboratory that aims at creating space for embodied criticality within the intra-national collective memory processes.

In this article, I examine performative transgression in, and interwoven with, The Wastefulness Commission 2021 by Traavik.info. Launched by Morten Traavik in December 2019, the so-called hypertheatre project evolved into a big national theatre scandal during the process from the announcement to the realization of two stage performances in 2021 (Part 1 Vestland: 14 May at Ole Bull Scene in Bergen/Norway; Part 2 Viken: 22 June at Drammens Teater in Drammen/Norway), and beyond. The project caused heated conflict within the performing arts field in Norway that spread into the cultural public sphere where it is still virulent at the time of writing. In the article, I first present a theoretical framing concerning performativity and transgression bound to the question of efficacy of performances and the relation between theatre and the public sphere before I move to the case. In the reading of the case, I apply a multiscale-approach, combining micro- and macro-perspectives. I examine how Traavik activates and performatively reconfigures pre-existing cultural and political controversies concerning the experimental performing arts in Norway. Further, I discuss the scandalizing dynamics through the perspective of performative transgression and account for how the question of framing and contextualization is part of the contentious cultural processes. Finally, I focus on one of the stage performances and the performative practice of re-enactment.

In this chapter I present theatre-specific perspectives on the perpetrator as aesthetic figure through a close reading of the performance Ødeland (Pálsson 2021, Hålogaland Teater) that deals with the forced evacuation and burning of Finnmark and Nord-Troms in 1944–1945, and the shortcomings of the process of bringing the perpetrators to justice after the war, both in the Nuremberg military trials and in Norway. I argue that the performance enables a processual view on the collective commission of mass violence (cf. Üngör & Anderson 2019) and engages in an activist memory position on behalf of the north–Norwegian civilian population. I show how the historical events are aesthetically actualized on stage to intervene in an injustice that – in the performance’s perspective – still pertains today. In the first part of the analysis, I show how the actors’ performative embodiment, the collective co-presence in the theatre space and the geographical situatedness contribute to the production of meaning and audience engagement. The complex dramaturgy and collective performative enunciation construction are analyzed on the performance’s micro-level. On this basis, I show in the second part of the chapter how the performance systematically takes the audience through the different levels and phases of the collective perpetration process, from the top-level architects, via the mid-level organizers, to the bottom-level of physical execution and the consequences for the civilian population. A crucial aesthetic aspect is how the audience’s imagination is worked on. Finally, I contextualize my reading in a Norwegian memory culture context where north-Norwegian memory activism has lately been criticized.

In the research project ‘Dramaturgies of Disagreement in Contemporary Theatre,’ I have examined how theatre performances dramaturgically work with substantial disagreement within audiences and non-audiences. In the first part of this article, I present and discuss the cultural political context, the societal backdrop, and the agenda of this research. I argue for the need to deal critically with normative premises and closures in this research. In the second part, I exemplify how a move from a normative point of departure towards a more descriptive approach may be realised. I start this part by presenting the applied sociological theory of communities of disagreements (Iversen 2014), before I describe, analyse, and compare three Norwegian participatory performances from recent years. I propose the metaphorical terms of theatre as either arena, laboratory, or catalyst for communities of disagreement to highlight differences between the dramaturgical approaches. I further examine how the relation between the limited public space of the theatre and the wider public sphere is conceptualised differently in the three cases. Finally, I relate the analysed dramaturgies to a spectrum of political theory that spans from deliberative to agonistic democracy to further illuminate and facilitate legitimate disagreement on dramaturgies of disagreement.

Metodisk blir den vitenskapelige analysen her medkonstituerende for selve verket.

This article discusses theatrical approaches to the Norwegian terror attacks on 22 July 2011, in the context of a global digital screen culture. By engaging in a close reading of two of the earliest theatrical articulations on the 22 July emergency, the author examines how specific aesthetic strategies relate to the on-going cultural trauma process. The article shows how the stage-blog-project Ikkje direkte råka by Maria Tryti Vennerød (Oslo 2012) and the theatre performance Manifest 2083 by CaféTeatret (Copenhagen 2012) explore some of the blind spots in this process. The analyses focus on how the self-reflexive work of verbal articulation in Ikkje direkte råka and the embodying and staging in Manifest 2083 illuminate inherent ambivalences, paradoxes, and ambiguities in the cultural processes, as well as the complex relationship between the collective and the individual under the conditions of a digital online media world.

Starting from the distinction between performative postdramatic poetics on the one hand, and poetics based on the traditional divide between stage and auditory on the other, Böhnisch examines the possibility of a third poetics between these two apparently opposing positions in drama and theatre aesthetics. Through an analysis of the performance Dråpene (eng.: The Drops, Lund & Ousland 2000) she shows how the scenic actions create performative openings and closings in relation to the child audience.

Children often have an extraordinary presence as a theatre audience. They are generally much more visible and audible than an adult audience, what means that they influence theatre performances in a crucial way. This raises particular theoretical and methodological challenges for descriptions and analyses of children?s theatre performances. The traditional concept of the audience as an addressee of the performance has to be replaced by a concept of the audience as a real contributor. This implies a paradigm change in the definition of theatrical performances. Performances are no longer conceived as a stable scenic text but as a variable event. This "performative turn", which has been discussed in the recent years in theatre research concerning the theatre in general, is particularly important for analysing children?s theatre. In this context the term "feedback loop" is a very productive starting point.

Staging Anti-Audiences: 'Cultural Wars' in Norwegian Theatre and the Politics of Performative Transgression.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
This paper examines The Wastefulness Commission 2021 by Traavik.info as a staged intervention into a fragmented and polarised cultural public sphere. Conceived as a “hypertheatre” project, the work deliberately blurred the distinction between theatrical event, media controversy, and political address, drawing experimental theatre into conflicts commonly framed as contemporary “culture wars.” Publicly announced as a collaboration between artist Morten Traavik and Sløseriombudsmannen—a highly visible digital persona denouncing public arts funding—the project provocatively positioned declared adversaries of experimental theatre not merely as critics, but as participants and addressees.
I propose the concept of the anti-audience to analyse how antagonistic publics are staged, mobilised, and rendered visible through performance. Rather than presupposing a sympathetic or consenting spectator, The Wastefulness Commission addresses non-attendance, opposition, and resentment as constitutive elements of its public formation. In doing so, the project transforms theatre into a site where political antagonism is not represented, but actively produced and negotiated.
Situating the case within debates on performativity, counterpublics, and agonistic public spheres, the paper engages critically with claims about the disconnection of experimental theatre from public life. While theories of performative aesthetics emphasise the transformative potential of co-presence within the theatrical event, this case demonstrates how theatrical performatives circulate across institutional, digital, and mediatized publics, where efficacy becomes unstable, contested, and politically ambivalent. Drawing on scholarship on theatre scandals and public conflict, I argue that The Wastefulness Commission performs publicness itself as an essentially contested process, exposing both the promise and the limits of transgressive artistic strategies in contemporary European democracies.

Accommodating disagreement on dramaturgies of disagreement.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
In this paper I present and discuss dramaturgies of disagreement in contemporary theatre with the aim to shed light on dramaturgical possibilities, differences and inscribed normative values. In my latest research project, I have examined conflict as part of an audience dramaturgy evolving within, through and around theatre performances: How do theatre performances dramaturgically leave room for, facilitate, provoke, and work with substantial and perceptible disagreement within audiences and/or non-audiences? That is what I have called “dramaturgies of disagreement” (Böhnisch 2019, 2022). I read these dramaturgies as attempts to address contemporary societal urgencies of democratic interaction in the public sphere. My approach is inspired by the concept of “communities of disagreement”, launched by the Norwegian sociologist Lars Laird Iversen (2014). Iversen’s theory of democratic interaction is positioned against an understanding of communities relying on shared values. It is related to an agonistic approach to democracy (cf. Mouffe 2000, 2005, 2013) that understands irreducible disagreement as the core of the political. Nevertheless, Iversen (2014, 2021) operates in between the opposing ideas of agonistic and deliberative democracy. In my paper I will compare different types of dramaturgies of disagreement, illustrated by three cases. I propose the metaphorical terms of theatre as arena, laboratory, or catalyst for communities of disagreement to highlight differences between the dramaturgical approaches. I further examine how the limited and concrete public space of the theatre is related to the wider public sphere. Finally, I relate the differing dramaturgical approaches to the opposed political ideas of deliberative versus agonistic democracy, to facilitate legitimate disagreement on dramaturgies of disagreement.

Enacting World War II memories and collective identities in recent Norwegian theatre productions.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
In this paper I will give insight into my ongoing research on how cultural memories of World War II and pertaining collective identities are performed, (re)enacted, and negotiated by recent Norwegian theatre productions. In this research, I scrutinize the agency of the aesthetic (cf. Rigney 2021) through a multi-scale approach, examining the performers’ embodiment practice and acting, as well as the inscribed audience, the implicated spectator, and the institutional framing as part of the performances’ aesthetic and dramaturgical strategies, and reading these strategies contextually within culturally contested mnemonic processes and contemporary societal urgencies. Hence, the performing arts perspectives are informed by memory studies concepts and theories, and vice versa, in this research. In addition, medium specificity comes to the fore as the research is part of a multi-disciplinary project (Making Memories. Contemporary Aesthetic Articulations of Norway in the Second World War at the University of Agder, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, 2022-2026). In the paper I will outline my approach, shortly present selected cases, and discuss preliminary findings. The paper is related to the proposed subject: Acting – reacting – enacting on stage and in the society.

Dramaturgies of Disagreement in Contemporary Theatre.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
In the research project Dramaturgies of disagreement, I set out to explore how contemporary theatre may work as arena, laboratory, or catalyst for communities of disagreement. The societal backdrop of my research are urgencies of democratic interaction in the public sphere. The idea of communities of disagreement has been launched by the Norwegian sociologist Lars Laird Iversen (2014) as part of a theory of democratic interaction that is pragmatical and descriptive but has normative implications as well. As a theatre researcher I adopt the sociological concept to dramaturgical analysis and theory. In my research I combine context-sensitive performance analyses with questions concerning the medium specificity of theatre as a societal institution and artform today. I investigate how performances dramaturgically leave room for, facilitate, provoke, and/or work with substantial disagreement within audiences (and non-audiences). How does disagreement become perceptible within the performance? Does disagreement in the performance relate to eventual disagreement about the performance in the wider public sphere – and vice versa? And what kind of contextualization is needed to understand the dynamics, significance, and eventual value of the specific dramaturgy of disagreement? What differences occur between various dramaturgies of disagreement and are they related to different poetics? May these differences be used to question and eventually develop further the sociological idea of communities of disagreement? I will present and discuss some of my findings as well as reflect on how the project is haunted by some of its normative implications.

Audience Dramaturgies of Disagreement: The 'Centre' as a Point of Exchange?
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
While the need to decentre the humanities and the arts is (or should be) an urgent and contested matter on the agendas of researchers, artists, theatre departments, and cultural policy makers today, we simultaneously witness a democratic public sphere that is severely disintegrating by processes of polarization and fragmentation. How do these urgencies relate to each other? And how do the problems of centre and periphery apply to the democratic public sphere as such? Could the idea of the ‘centre’ as a point of exchange be useful here? Or would it conceal issues of inequality and domination?
In my paper I will present and discuss my research on audience dramaturgies of disagreement in contemporary theatre performances. In this ongoing project, with cases from Scandinavia and Germany, I adopt the sociological concept of communities of disagreement to dramaturgical analysis and theory. The idea of communities of disagreement has been launched by the Norwegian sociologist Lars Laird Iversen (2014) as part of a theory of democratic interaction that, in many ways, works ‘in between’ the conflicting conceptions of deliberative versus agonistic democracy. I apply this 'in between' idea of democratic interaction on contemporary theatre performances that dramaturgically leave room for, facilitate and work with substantial and perceptible disagreement within audiences (and ‘non-audiences’). How does these dramaturgies work? What kind of poetics are they based on? Does disagreement within the attending audience relate to eventual disagreement about the performance in the wider public sphere? And what kind of contextualization is needed to understand the dynamics, significance, and eventual value of the perceptible disagreement within the audience? Can such dramaturgies of disagreement be understood as temporary and context-sensitive points of exchange, ‘centres’ that counteract the ongoing disintegration of the democratic public sphere? And in what way may these perspectives contribute to decentre theatre research?
The reserach project is funded by the Arts Council Norway as part of the research programme Kunst og sosiale fellesskap [Art and social communities].

Show summary
I forskningsprosjektet Making Memories – Contemporary Aesthetic Articulations of Norway in the Second World War (UiA, 2022–2026) arbeider vi med komparative perspektiver på samtidskulturelle fremstillinger av andre verdenskrig i Norge.

Show summary

Hvilken kunstnerisk praksis gir mening under krigen?

Politics of Memory: Antagonistic, Cosmopolitan and Agonistic Memory in Milo Rau's "Breivik's statement"(IIPM, 2012).
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
While European consensual, cosmopolitan cultural memory is being challenged, and populist movements are reactivating antagonistic collective memories, memory studies scholars have developed the idea of a third mode of remembering: neither cosmopolitan nor antagonistic, but agonistic (Bull & Hansen, 2016). Agonistic memory takes into account political conflict and politicized representations of past conflicts and is at the same time reflective and dialogic. The EU-research-project UNREST – Unsettling Remembering and Social Cohesion in Transnational Europe, 2016–2019, has recently unfolded this approach theoretically and empirically.
In my paper, I will briefly present the three modes of remembering, and the politics of memory associated with them, before I will outline and discuss how these concepts can be used as tools in a contextual dramaturgical analysis of Milo Rau’s Breiviks Erklärung (Breivik’s Statement) (IIPM, 2012). Finally, I will sketch out how the case of Breiviks Erklärung may illustrate both the need for and the difficulties of agonistic memory.

Depolitisation, Collective Identity and the Battle of Narratives after ‘22 July’ – Seen Through the Lenses of Some Theatre Performances.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
The terror attacks on 22 July 2011 in Oslo and on the island of Utøya (simply referred to as 22 July in Norway) are generally considered to be the worst incident in Norwegian history since World War II. The attacks were soon called a national trauma, Norway’s 9/11. But unlike the 9/11 attacks, the perpetrator of 22 July came from inside the Norwegian society. Moreover, he declared himself a nationalist and his terrorist acts to be preemptive, in defense of the ethnic Norwegians and Norwegian culture. In the massive popular mobilization following the attacks, national identity was reconstructed through the dominant themes of love, inclusion, democracy and openness. Meanwhile, he battle of narratives after 22 July started as is, for instance, manifested in the contradictory psychiatric reports in the 22 July court case and the corresponding polarized public debate about the mental status of the perpetrator. Based on cultural trauma theory, the presentation will discuss the de- and re-politicization of the terror attacks and the construction of collective identity. This will be done through the lenses of three theatre performances: Breiviks Erklärung (Rau/IIPM, 2012), Manifest 2083 (Lollike/CaféTeatret, 2012) and Ikkje direkte råka (Vennerød, 2012). Unlike the use of music after 22 July, theatrical approaches did not intend to achieve the function of uniting and comforting the public. On the contrary, several performances dealing with 22 July were highly controversial and contested. The reading of the performances, which operate from a somewhat marginal position, will be complemented by a look at the exhibition in the 22 July Centre in Oslo, which is part of the on-going official response to the terror attacks.

We are interested in the role art plays in the public sphere as a social and political context, where we focus on the mutual relations between art (music, theatre, visual arts, film, etc.) and conflict (social, ideological, economic, armed, etc.). This includes obvious conflicts, as well as those more or less overlooked or hidden. How do art works and artistic processes approach different kinds of conflict? What happens to artistic processes, art works, artists and art institutions in circumstances that are affected by violent conflict? How can aesthetic experiences and aesthetic forms play a dynamic role in dealing with complex and potentially conflicting social conditions? In addition, how does the art in itself become an object of conflict, stir up conflict or even inflict conflict under certain conditions? Finally, can art play a vital role when consensus orientation becomes socially or politically unproductive? Can artists and art educators be ‘dissensus-architects’ and create productive arenas for dissensus?

The terror attacks on 22 July 2011 in Oslo and on the island of Utøya are generally considered to be the worst incident in Norwegian history since World War II; a ‘national trauma’, the ‘9/11 of Norway’. Four years later, the 22 July Centre was opened in the very place where the attacks began, the still damaged high-rise government office block in Oslo. In my paper I will analyse the exhibitions’ dramaturgical strategies with emphasis on the question of how ambivalences and ambiguities in the on-going cultural trauma process are dealt with in the exhibition. The analysis is based on my earlier research on theatrical articulations of the 22 July emergency (Böhnisch 2014a and 2014b), on cultural trauma theory (Alexander et al. 2004), on dissent-theory of democratic interaction (Iversen 2014), as well as on contemporary dramaturgical approaches to exhibition design (Stapferhaus Lenzburg et al. 2014).

Show summary
My on-going research project concerns theatre, conflict and experiences of disagreement. In my presentation I discuss the case of the dance performance De Grenseløse (2012) by the Norwegian choreographer Hege Haagenrud. De Grenseløse is a performance for young audiences from the 8th grade and upwards, which shows the (inner) world of a girl who struggles with self-harming and anorexia. Initially, the performance was selected for distribution within the Cultural Rucksack (Den kulturelle skolesekken) in several Norwegian counties. When one of the counties, Buskerud County Municipality, decided to stop distribution on the basis of mental health arguments, a heated public debate arouse. I analyse this debate, the way it unfolded in a seminar entitled “Farlig kunst? – hva kan vises innenfor Den kulturelle skolesekken” (Dangerous Art? – What can be shown within the Cultural Rucksack), arranged by Norsk Scenekunstbruk, the Norwegian touring network for performing arts. Questions: Which perspectives, positions, questions and theses are presented in the discussion on ‘Dangerous Art’, and how are they legitimized? How is the discussion facilitated and evolving? How is disagreement expressed and dealt with? What are the blind spots in the debate? And how may these be related to the aesthetic strategies of the performance? The discussion sheds light on the potential and pitfalls of dissensus-experiences in a highly complex field of cooperation between artistic, educational and health care approaches.

Å gi terroren en scene?
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary

Full text in Research Archive
Show summary

Show summary
"Performativity" or "the performative" are ambiguous concepts. One cause for this ambiguity is that these concepts are often established and presented in a confusing combination of systematic-theoretical and historic-analytical approaches. The paper discusses the following questions: Is performativity a characteristic of particular aesthetic events or artefacts, or is it a dimension of all (theatre) art, or possibly a dimension of varying importance? Is it, in this latter case, standing in a dependent relationship to other dimensions? Is performativity the result of a particular theoretical approach as distinct from and opposed to other theoretical approaches? What supports this approach and when should it be applied?

Show summary
A feedback loop is a reciprocal impact of actors and audiences in performances. How spectators affect actors, depends ? among other things ? on their ways of being audience. The thesis applies and elaborates a performative approach to theatre. Moreover, it explores an underexposed field in theatre studies: performances for children under three years of age ? sometimes as young as six months old. It is based on the presumption that theatre artists receive productive challenges from very young audiences, and that aesthetic strategies in performances can be read as answers to such challenges. The study focuses on the significance of very young children?s pronounced presence as theatre audiences, a non-discreet audience style that highlights the event dimension of theatre. This dimension has been central to a performative approach to theatre. The study takes Fischer-Lichte?s Ästhetik des Performativen* (2004) as its theoretical point of departure. In her perspective, performances are conceived as unique events, focusing on the unplanned and uncontrollable, by taking a strict stance against a view on performances as planned and repeatable theatrical structures. The thesis questions this binary setup and presents an alternative contribution to a performative theatre theory and analysis.
