  A silo׳s hopper supports the majority loads induced by the stored particulate solids. Such loads vary from filling to discharging provided the hopper is steep enough to secure a mass flow; when the hopper is too shallow to promote a mass flow, funnel flow usually prevails – where how loads develop along walls of a shallow hopper remains to be addressed. In the paper, normal pressure and frictional traction were measured with pressure transducers as imposed by testing material sand along the walls of a full-scale conical shallow hopper. The transducers were carefully mounted in the designated positions of hopper walls along a generator. To make the measurement results representative, a concentric filling was carried out to ensure the sand depositing into the hopper axi-symmetrically; the filling normal pressure and frictional traction as developed along the hopper walls were then measured. The normal pressure and frictional traction during discharging were also measured when the sand was discharged centrically in a free discharge mode. Results from measurements showed that the normal pressure at the commencement of discharge changed only slightly from that as developed at the end of filling. Both the filling and discharging normal pressure, as demonstrated in the paper, could be evaluated based on the mechanics of steep hopper filling pressures by adopting an effective friction coefficient as proposed in Eurocode 1-4:2006 for a shallow hopper. Measurement also showed that the frictional traction was not fully developed either in filling or during discharging; a friction coefficient was only partially mobilised as an effective friction coefficient, and might vary very significantly from one location to another along the wall.

  A silo with a shallow hopper is designed to achieve the required silo capacity when the headroom available is limited, provided that the issue of segregation of stored particulate solids is not a problem. Several analytical models have been proposed to try to predict the design loads for such shallow silo hoppers to guarantee their structural integrity. In this study, a novel finite element analysis has been conducted to explore the development of pressures and tractions on the wall of a full scale shallow hopper when it is filled with sand. Simple meshes were used to represent the sand and the hopper wall. Coulomb friction modelled the interaction between the sand and the wall. The process of progressive filling was simulated by temporarily suspending and then re-activating appropriate parts of the mesh. The two computational models of “switched-on filling” and “progressive-filling” were used to determine whether this simple treatment of the deposition process makes a significant difference to the predicted forces on the hopper wall: it is evident that progressive filling produces some significant changes that lead to more realism. Experiments were also conducted that measured local pressures on the shallow hopper wall under axisymmetric filling with sand. Comparisons between the numerical predictions, the measurements and existing algebraic models are presented. The results show clearly that wall friction is not fully developed in a shallow hopper, and that one algebraic model captures the behaviour well. However, the results also show that this problem is quite complicated and worthy of further study.

  Magnetic contamination of the drilling fluid shields the Earth's magnetic field measured by the magnetic sensors, and may contribute significantly to errors in directional surveying of a wellbore. A series of laboratory measurements were performed to investigate such magnetic shielding effects. In the measurement, a single axis fluxgate magnetometer was immersed in model drilling fluids prepared by mixing powders of known magnetic properties (magnetite and pure iron) into a solution of xanthan gum in fresh water, whereafter the vertical component of the Earth's field inside the fluid was measured. It was found that the strong shielding effect of dry iron powder essentially vanished when was suspended in the drilling fluid. The magnetic shielding caused by magnetite, however, remained significant also in solution, showing a complex dynamical behaviour. Initially the magnetic field was significantly damped, and this shielding was found to increase further for the next hour or so, reaching a fairly sharp maximum. The shielding then started to decay slowly and irregularly again over the next few days.

  Magnetic contamination of the drilling fluid may contribute significantly to errors in directional surveying of wellbores. Such contaminations shields the field measured by the magnetic sensors in MWD directional tools. The resulting error often exceeds typical sensor uncertainties, and so the accuracy of the inferred wellbore position is severely degraded. Although the magnetic interference can be reduced by careful attention to procedures for transport, pumping and handling of drilling fluids and their associated additives, the problem has not yet been eliminated. In order to understand the magnetic shielding effect in a well-defined setting, we have initiated a series of laboratory measurements, where magnetic material of known properties are added to a well defined non-magnetic drilling fluid, and measuring the resulting magnetic shielding with a fluxgate magnetometer immersed in the fluid. In our experiments, powdered magnetite was added to a mixture of xanthan gum in water to obtain a mixture of nominal magnetic susceptibility typical of drilling fluids containing metal from pipe wear and erosion. Immediately after stirring, the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic field inside the liquid was measured and found to be significantly damped. Without touching the system, the field was subsequently logged. It was found to continue to decay for the next hour, or so, reaching a fairly sharp minimum. The magnetic field then started to increase slowly and irregularly again over the next few days. The observed effect, combined with analysis of directional data, can explain errors encountered in directional surveying.
