  This article examines how climate change skepticism (CCS) intersects with sexism and masculinity in Southern Norway. It reveals how CCS can serve as a tactic to reject the perceived feminized and moralizing power of climate attitudes. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork (2022–2025) and qualitative interviews, this article explores how participants mobilized skepticism as a form of identity work and defense to protect threatened masculinity and justified patriarchal privilege. Using frameworks of system justification and aggrieved entitlement, the research demonstrates how participants framed climate policies as feminized and moralizing threats and used CCS to signal rebelliousness, rationality, and group belonging. CCS thus operated not merely as scientific doubt but as a cultural strategy for maintaining patriarchal privilege. Conducted in Norway, a country celebrated for egalitarian and gender equal values, the findings demonstrate how gendered narratives shaped climate attitudes. By engaging with skeptics who typically distrust researchers, this paper examines how CCS served as a tool for expressing masculinity. Climate communication that is sensitive to identity, avoids gendered framing, and engages masculine norms may reduce defensive resistance and open more inclusive dialogue.

  The intersection of public communication, climate change, and justice constitutes a nascent but growing interdisciplinary field of vital importance as climate change, driven largely by consumption patterns in high-income counties, disproportionately affects communities with limited adaptive capacity, raising profound justice concerns. This scoping review delves into the emerging domain of public communication regarding climate and justice and seeks to provide a comprehensive overview that may help guide future research. It maps the landscape of existing peer-reviewed journal scholarship, identifying trends and gaps across disciplines such as communication, energy politics, and urban planning. Following a birds-eye quantitative analysis of English peer-reviewed journal articles in the field (N = 250 studies), six thematic areas are scrutinized in-depth: (1) activism and protest, (2) journalism and news media, (3) international negotiations, national policy, and local engagement, (4) art and cultural production, (5) climate obstruction and delay, and (6) communication effects on attitudes and behaviors. The review reveals, inter alia, a predominance of research originating from, and case studies focused on high-income countries, a strong reliance on qualitative methods, and a tendency to conceive of justice in terms of distributive rather than procedural or representational questions. In the authors' view, the review indicates a need for comparative research, quantitative studies, and a broader inclusion of perspectives from regions disproportionately affected by climate change—particularly from low- and middle-income countries. The authors call for a concerted effort to bridge the gap between activism and communication by emphasizing the critical role of justice-oriented communication in fostering a fair and rapid transition to a sustainable future.

  This paper investigates the prevalence of climate skepticism among 3rd year engineering students and seeks to understand how pedagogical interventions can be used to challenge climate skeptic views. This contribution follows a two-pronged approach to estimate the proportion of climate skeptic attitudes in the classroom, understand their root cause and, most importantly, develop pedagogical tools to challenge such views. The first part involved conducting two statement-based surveys to identify the prevalence of climate skepticism before and after pedagogical interventions. The second part discusses the effect of the use of interactive pedagogical methods to challenge climate skepticism and reduce potential conflict in the classroom. The goal of this research is to determine which pedagogical methods can contribute to changing attitudes towards climate skepticism among engineering students. Two surveys were given to 275 engineering students before and after several hours of lectures on sustainability theory and an interactive class exercise to challenge climate skeptical views. The results of the surveys showed that climate skepticism among our group of engineering students was higher than the Norwegian population average and that the chosen pedagogical intervention showed mixed results in changing these attitudes. The results of the study can be used to understand how engineers perceive the challenge of climate change and to what extent engineering students are skeptical of climate change science. The results will also be useful for educators in understanding how topics of climate change can be effectively taught and how climate skepticism can be dealt with in the classroom through effective pedagogical methods.

  This chapter examines the transformative potential of higher education institutions (HEIs) in facilitating regional green transitions with regional visits and cultivating sustainable imagination through active pedagogical methods. By anchoring students’ learning in real-world interactions, HEIs enhance essential competencies for education for sustainable development, such as systems-thinking, strategic planning, and normative debate, while also nurturing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. The methods aim to empower students as active contributors to regional sustainable transitions. Utilising a self-study research approach, this chapter emphasises reflective methods and feedback loops to refine pedagogical strategies and foster transformative learning experiences, enhancing students’ competencies in sustainability education. Based on teaching and self-reflective practices at the University of Agder in Norway, it involves 110 students from 2022 to 2025 within courses in teacher education and social sciences, focusing on sustainability. The chapter explores the interplay between sustainability, regional engagement and imagination, illustrating how active pedagogical methods can enhance the competencies necessary for sustainability. It highlights the importance of regional exploration to ground imaginative skills in tangible projects.

  Denne artikkelbaserte avhandlingen undersøker klimaskepsis i Sør‑Norge som et uttrykk for identitet og underliggende frustrasjoner, snarere enn et rent kunnskapsproblem. Gjennom induktiv etnografi med feltarbeid fra januar 2022 til mai 2025, undersøkes klimaskeptikeres normative begrunnelser gjennom dyptgående, kontekstuelle møter, med særlig vekt på rettferdighet, maskulinitet og strategisk offerrolle. Funnene peker på at klimaskepsis først og fremst er identitets‑ og statuspolitikk — noe som krever mer enn faktakorrigering, men også inkluderende prosesser og pedagogiske intervensjoner. Mye forskning på klimaskepsis fokuserer på organiserte aktører, digitale nettverk og kvantitative målinger av holdninger. Denne avhandlingen tar et annet utgangspunkt: klimaskepsis studeres som uttrykk for identitet og underliggende frustrasjoner. Målet har vært å avdekke hva som ligger bak klimaskeptiske ytringer og hvordan disse fungerer i hverdagslige sosiale praksiser. Deltakerne ble rekruttert ved hjelp av snøballmetoden. I denne studien er det totalt 50 deltakere, med fem nøkkeldeltakere som jeg møtte flere ganger gjennom de tre årene med feltarbeid. Disse deltakerne er verken organisert i formelle skeptikergrupper eller folkevalgte. Norge har et nasjonalt paradoks: Norge kombinerer ambisjoner om internasjonalt klimalederskap med sterke fossilinteresser, noe som gjør klimaskepsis både politisk og normativt ladet. Konsensuskultur og tradisjon for konfliktunngåelse gjør Sør-Norge spesielt fruktbart for å undersøke hvordan skepsis kan uttrykkes som både dominans‑ og offerdiskurser, samt hvordan slike uttrykk knyttes til narrativer om “feminisering” og globalisering av norsk kultur truet av en “klimaelite”. Dette utforskes gjennom tre forskningsspørsmål: 1) Hvordan kan klimaskepsis brukes til å skape identitetsgrenser? 2) Hvilke skjulte samfunnsmessige frustrasjoner uttrykkes i klimaskeptiske påstander? 3) Hvordan kan høyere utdanning produktivt møte klimaskepsis i undervisningen? Funnene formidles i fire publikasjoner: Publikasjon 1 undersøker rettferdighetsoppfatninger blant klimaskeptikere i Sør‑Norge og viser at skepsis i stor grad handler om opplevd marginalisering og vern av identitet snarere enn primært vitenskapelig uenighet. Publikasjon 2 analyserer koblingen mellom skepsis og kjønnsuttrykk. Den viser hvordan klima ofte kodes som “feminint” og emosjonelt, mens skepsis framstilles som “maskulint” og rasjonelt; klimaskepsis brukes som ressurs for å uttrykke maskulinitetsidealer og motstå et oppfattet progressivt press. Publikasjon 3 utforsker strategisk offerrolle: hvordan offernarrativer mobiliseres for å beskytte privilegier og delegitimere en “klimaelite”. Her anvendes weaponized victimhood som analytisk perspektiv for å vise hvordan offerfortellinger kan hevde moralsk legitimitet og avlede ansvar; studien viser at slike fortellinger kan legitimere inaktivitet og statusforsvar. Skeptikerne framstilte gjerne klimaaktivister og klimapolitikk som representanter for en “woke agenda” som de hevdet var en trussel mot ytringsfrihet og privilegier. Mønstrene peker mer mot konkurrerende normative forestillinger om rettferdighet enn mot et rent kunnskapsproblem. Det reiser spørsmålet: mangler vi forestillingsevne mer enn informasjon? Dette motiverte det praktiske bidraget i avhandlingen: Publikasjon 4 tilbyr et pedagogisk bidrag ved å introdusere bærekraftig fantasi som rammeverk i høyere utdanning. Den presenterer læringsdesign som kombinerer systemtenkning, normativ refleksjon og dialogiske ferdigheter for å skape rom for mer konstruktiv klimadebatt og redusere polarisering ved å bruke fantasi som verktøy for å forestille seg alternative framtider. Sentrale funn er at klimaskepsis fungerer som identitets‑ og statuspolitikk: den tegner moralske og normative grenser, uttrykker skjulte frustrasjoner, og er ofte forankret i narrativer om elitedominans og nasjonal berettigelse. Dette innebærer at tiltak som kun retter seg mot informasjonsmangler vil være utilstrekkelige. For å møte klimaskepsis må politikk og kommunikasjon også ta tak i normative aspekter — og utdanning kan bidra ved å styrke forestillingsevne, kritisk refleksjon og dialogiske ferdigheter. For å møte klimaskepsis foreslår jeg kombinasjoner av inkluderende beslutningsprosesser, retorikk som adresserer fordelingsrettferdighet, og pedagogiske tiltak som styrker forestillingsevne og dialogkompetanse.
