  Aims and objectives: This study seeks to test the inferential properties of self-reported measures of language profile on performance. We hypothesise that well-powered dimension reduction techniques (in this study, principal component analysis or PCA) will perform well in predictive performance on language processing tests. Method: The Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire was administered to 262 Norwegian–English bilingual respondents. A subset of 64 participants also completed the following measures of individual differences: (a) LexTALE as a proficiency measure, (b) a morphosyntactic error judgement task, (c) two verbal fluency tasks (semantic and phonemic), (d) a non-linguistic task-switching measure of domain-general executive control. Data and Analyses: The sample size permitted a well-powered PCA of 26 variables, identifying seven principal components: (a) English Use, (b) English Later AoA, (c) English Learning and Proficiency, (d) English Media Exposure, (e) Foreign Pronunciation in English, (f) Language Mixing and (g) Overall Language Proficiency. Scores were extracted for the subset of 64 participants, and regression analyses were conducted for each objective task using the self-report-based component scores as predictors. All components predicted performance on at least one task, except for English Later AoA and English Media Exposure. These results demonstrate consistent relationships between self-reported and behavioural measures and underscore the utility of PCA component loadings as inferential predictors in bilingualism research. Originality: The study shows clear and sensible relationships between subjective measures and performance even following dimension reduction. The study highlights the importance of individual differences and lends further credence to the use of self-reported measures for bilingual research. Significance/Implications: Given the variability across bilingual populations, we advocate for the broader inferential use of self-reported measures and application of PCA in multilingual research to better capture the underlying dimensions of language experience and proficiency and their predictive abilities.

  Background Motivation and self-efficacy are well-established predictors of engagement and persistence within structured exercise programmes. Yet it remains unclear whether these psychological factors predict objective adherence metrics and associated fitness outcomes within home-based exercise programmes for older adults. Methods This study adopted a person-centred approach to examine whether distinct psychological profiles predict objective adherence and fitness outcomes following a 26-week home-based exercise programme in 88 older adults (age = 67.2 ± 5.5 years). Objective adherence was defined as compliance with the prescribed exercise volume and quantified using cumulative metabolic equivalent minutes (MET-mins) derived from heart rate data reflecting session intensity and duration across the programme, as opposed to behavioural self-report measures. Psychological profiles were generated using latent profile analysis based on autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and exercise self-efficacy. Results Two profiles were identified: an autonomous and highly confident profile characterised by high selfefficacy and autonomous motivation, and a moderately autonomous and confident profile characterised by lower self-efficacy and autonomous motivation. Controlled motivation was similar between groups. Profiles did not differ in demographic or physiological characteristics at baseline. Adherence was high and comparable across the two profiles for all indices (e.g., cumulative MET-mins: 129 ± 66% vs. 116 ± 38%). Furthermore, both profiles demonstrated significant and comparable improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness (V̇O₂peak), handgrip strength, flexibility (chair sit-and-reach; back scratch), and mobility (8-foot up-and-go). Conclusions Baseline differences in self-efficacy and autonomous motivation among older adults did not significantly predict adherence or fitness outcomes within a structured, well-supported home-based exercise programme. The programme incorporated consistent objective monitoring of exercise behaviour, along with regular guidance and feedback from the research team delivered through scheduled participant contact. This level of structured behavioural support may have reduced the influence of psychological profile membership on exercise adherence and fitness outcomes, resulting in comparable positive outcomes across participants. Future research should investigate whether motivation profiles become more predictive of long-term adherence and sustained fitness outcomes once external behavioural support is reduced or withdrawn.

  We investigated whether the difference between chronological and modeled brain age explains individual differences in language performance among healthy older adults. Age-related decline in language abilities is widely documented, with considerable variability among healthy older individuals in both language performance and underlying neural substrate. We derived predicted brain age from grey and white matter using machine learning and used this measure to estimate neurological deviations from chronological age. Using Bayesian mixed-effects modeling, we tested whether brain-age deviations predict language performance in a sample of 86 adults aged 60 years and above. We assessed the effect of brain-age deviations on performance across four well-established language processing tasks, each tapping into linguistic domains known to be vulnerable to ageing and show individual variability in skill levels, in both comprehension and production. Our findings suggest that, in healthy older individuals, predicted deviations of brain age from chronological age do not predict language abilities. This challenges the idea that brain age is a reliable determinant of language processing variability, at least in healthy (as opposed to pathological) ageing and highlights the need to consider other neural and cognitive factors when studying language decline.

  Exercise training has been proposed to counteract age-related cognitive decline through improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF hypothesis). Research has focused on cognitive domains like attention and processing speed, and one cross-sectional study reported a positive relationship between CRF and language production in older adults. In a randomized controlled trial, we investigated whether these benefits could extend to language comprehension in healthy older adults, and whether bilinguals, for whom language processing is more costly, would exhibit greater benefits than monolinguals. Eighty older English monolinguals and 80 older Norwegian-English bilinguals were randomized into either a 6-month exercise training group or into a passive control group. We assessed CRF (VO2peak) and language comprehension (reaction times to spoken word monitoring) in first (L1, all participants) and second language (L2, bilinguals only), before and after the intervention. We found that monolinguals in the exercise group (compared to the control group) were faster in comprehension following the intervention. Moreover, this effect was mediated by exercise-induced increases in VO2peak, supporting the CRF hypothesis. This extends previous cross-sectional research and establishes a causal link between exercise training and speeded comprehension in older monolinguals. However, despite inducing increased VO2peak, exercise training did not affect bilingual (L1 or L2) comprehension, and bilinguals in both groups were slower after the intervention period. Exploratory analyses suggested that this slowing may be driven by participants with low L2 proficiency, but further research is needed to examine whether bilingual language processing is in fact unaffected by exercise training and its consequent improvements in CRF.

  Sleep and language are fundamental to human existence and have both been shown to substantially affect cognitive functioning including memory, attentional performance, and cognitive control. Surprisingly, there is little-to-no research that examines the shared impact of bilingualism and sleep on cognitive functions. In this paper, we provide a general overview of existing research on the interplay between bilingualism and sleep with a specific focus on executive functioning. First, we highlight their interconnections and the resulting implications for cognitive performance. Second, we emphasize the need to explore how bilingualism and sleep intersect at cognitive and neural levels, offering insights into potential ways of studying the interplay between sleep, lan guage learning, and bilingual language use. Finally, we suggest that understanding these relationships could enhance our knowledge of reserve and its role in mitigating age-related cognitive decline.

  We conducted an artificial language learning experiment to study learning asymmetries that might reveal latent preferences relating to, and any dependencies between, the edge alignment and quantity sensitivity (QS) parameters in stress patterning. We used a poverty of the stimulus approach to teach American English speakers an unbounded QS stress rule (stress a single CV: syllable) and either a left- or right-aligning QI rule if only light syllables were present. Forms with two CV: syllables were withheld in the learning phase and added in the test phase, forcing participants to choose between left- and right-aligning options for the QS rule. Participants learned the left- and right-edge QI rules equally well, and also the basic QS rule. Response patterns for words with two CV: syllables suggest biases favoring a left-aligning QS rule with a left-edge QI default. Our results also suggest that a left-aligning QS pattern with a rightedge QI default was least favored. We argue that stress patterns shown to be preferred based on evidence from ease-of-learning and participants’ untrained generalizations can be considered more natural than less favored opposing patterns. We suggest that cognitive biases revealed by artificial stress learning studies may have contributed to shaping stress typology.

  Perfetti (2007) proposed that the quality of lexical representations affects reading. We investigated the role of lexical quality in decoding. Eighty-four adults read aloud words and pseudowords with dense and sparse neighbourhoods in a masked form-priming experiment. Individual-difference measures of language and cognitive processes were collected and entered into a principal component analysis (PCA). Compared to a non-overlapping control prime, we observed greater facilitatory form-priming for word targets with sparse neighbourhoods than those with dense neighbourhoods. A PCA component related to orthographic precision affected form-priming: people with low orthographic precision showed greater facilitation for words with sparse neighbourhoods, primed by pseudowords, than those with dense neighbourhoods. People with high orthographic precision demonstrated the converse, only when primed by words. For pseudoword reading, word primes facilitated more than pseudoword primes in people with low orthographic precision. People with high orthographic precision showed the opposite pattern.

  Successful sentence comprehension requires the binding, or composition, of multiple words into larger structures to establish meaning. Using magnetoencephalography, we investigated the neural mechanisms involved in binding at the syntax level, in a task where contributions from semantics were minimized. Participants were auditorily presented with minimal sentences that required binding (pronoun and pseudo-verb with the corresponding morphological inflection; “she grushes”) and pseudo-verb wordlists that did not require binding (“cugged grushes”). Relative to no binding, we found that syntactic binding was associated with a modulation in alpha band (8–12 Hz) activity in left-lateralized language regions. First, we observed a significantly smaller increase in alpha power around the presentation of the target word (“grushes”) that required binding (−0.05 to 0.1 s), which we suggest reflects an expectation of binding to occur. Second, during binding of the target word (0.15–0.25 s), we observed significantly decreased alpha phase-locking between the left inferior frontal gyrus and the left middle/inferior temporal cortex, which we suggest reflects alpha-driven cortical disinhibition serving to strengthen communication within the syntax composition neural network. Altogether, our findings highlight the critical role of rapid spatial–temporal alpha band activity in controlling the allocation, transfer, and coordination of the brain’s resources during syntax composition.

  Sentence reading involves constant competition between lexical candidates. Previous research with monolinguals has shown that the neighbours of a read word are inhibited, making their retrieval as a subsequent target more difficult, but the duration of this interference may depend on reading skills. In this study, we examined neighbour priming effects in sentence reading among proficient Norwegian–English bilinguals reading in their L2. We investigated the effects of the distance between prime and target (short vs. long) and the nature of the overlap between the two words (beginning or end), and related these to differences in individual cognitive skills. Our results replicated the inhibition effects found in monolinguals, albeit slightly delayed. Interference between form-related words was affected by the L2 reading skills and, crucially, by the phonological decoding abilities of the bilingual reader. We discuss the results in light of competition models of bilingual reading as well as episodic memory accounts.

  ABSTRACT We investigated the effect of healthy ageing on the lexical and syntactic processes involved in sentence production. Young and older adults completed a semantic interference sentence production task: we manipulated whether the target picture and distractor word were semantically related or unrelated and whether they fell within the same phrase (“the watch and the clock/hippo move apart”) or different phrases (“the watch moves above the clock/hippo”). Both age groups were slower to initiate sentences containing a larger, compared to a smaller, initial phrase, indicating a similar phrasal scope of advanced planning. However, older adults displayed significantly larger semantic interference effects (slower to initiate sentences when the target picture and distractor word were related) than young adults, indicating an age-related increase in lexical competition. Thus, while syntactic planning is preserved with age, older speakers encounter problems managing the temporal co-activation of competing lexical items during sentence production.

  Abstract According to the lexical quality hypothesis, differences in the orthographic, semantic, and phonological representations of words will affect individual reading performance. While several studies have focused on orthographic precision and semantic coherence, few have considered phonological precision. The present study used a suite of individual difference measures to assess which components of lexical quality contributed to competition resolution in a masked priming experiment. The experiment measured form priming for word and pseudoword targets with dense and sparse neighbourhoods in 84 university students. Individual difference measures of language and cognitive skills were also collected and a principal component analysis was used to group these data into components. The data showed that phonological precision and NHD interacted with form priming. In participants with high phonological precision, the direction of priming for word targets with sparse neighbourhoods was facilitatory, while the direction for those with dense neighbourhoods was inhibitory. In contrast, people with low phonological precision showed the opposite pattern, but the interaction was non-significant. These results suggest that the component of phonological precision is linked to lexical competition for word recognition and that access to the mental lexicon during reading is affected by differing levels of phonological processing.

  Structural priming is the tendency to repeat syntactic structure across sentences and can be divided into short-term (prime to immediately following target) and long-term (across an experimental session) components. This study investigates how nondeclarative memory could support both the transient, short-term and the persistent, long-term structural priming effects commonly seen in the literature. We propose that these characteristics are supported by different subcomponents of nondeclarative memory: Perceptual and conceptual nondeclarative memory respectively. Previous studies have suggested that these subcomponents age differently, with only conceptual memory showing age-related decline. By investigating how different components of structural priming vary across the life span, we aim to elucidate how nondeclarative memory supports 2 seemingly different components of structural priming. In 167 participants ranging between 20 and 85 years old, we find no change in short-term priming magnitude and performance on perceptual tasks, whereas both long-term priming and conceptual memory vary with age. We suggest therefore that the 2 seemingly different components of structural priming are supported by different components of nondeclarative memory. These findings have important implications for theoretical accounts of structural priming.
