Online screening tools are recommended in well-child visits to support early detection and standardized assessment, while also facilitating meaningful dialogue and collaboration with parents. However, little is known about how public health nurses experience and handle these tools in practice. The aim of this study was to explore public health nurses’ experiences with, and handling of, online screening tools in their work practices in well-child clinics and school health services. We used observations and semi-structured interviews to capture public health nurses’ experiences and practices after integration of online screening tools. Public health nurses were observed during well-child visits, and when possible, also before and after visits to provide a broader understanding of their practice. In total, eight public health nurses were observed in connection to well-child visits with families of children aged 0–7 years. Interviews were conducted over an extended time-period, with a total of 13 public health nurses participating individually or in groups. Data was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis of verbatim transcripts and field notes. The findings from this study illustrate how public health nurses experienced tension between structural requirements and relational values when online screening tools were implemented into their practice. The relationship with families was considered the cornerstone of their work, shaping trust, continuity, and holistic understanding. While the tools offered opportunities for structured assessment and dialogue, they also introduced uncertainty about interpretation, follow-up, and professional responsibility, often diverting time and attention away from nurturing relationships. The experienced tension between standardized procedures and relational care reflected a deeper struggle to balance professional obligations with the relational connection that public health nurses regarded as foundational to their role. These dynamics are explored through three themes: When the Structures Comes Between Us, When We Get Trapped Within the Structures, and When the Structures Supports Our Practice. To realize the potential benefits of online screening tools, integration must safeguard both structural requirements and relational needs, ensuring that structures do not come at the expense of trust, relationship, and presence.

Researchers and practitioners are increasingly engaged in discussions about the hopes and fears of artificial intelligence (AI). In this article, we critically examine the early scholarly response to one prominent form of generative and conversational AI: ChatGPT. The launch of ChatGPT has sparked a surge in research, resulting in a fast-growing but fragmented body of literature. Against this backdrop, we undertook a systematic literature review of 192 empirical articles about ChatGPT to examine, synthesize, and evaluate the foci and gaps in this early wave of research to capture the dominating and immediate scholarly reactions to ChatGPT's release. Our analytical focus covered the following main aspects: perspectives on the purpose, usage, attitudes, and impacts of ChatGPT, as well as the theories and methods scholars apply in studying ChatGPT. Most studies in our sample focus on performance tests of ChatGPT, highlighting its strengths in remembering, understanding, and analyzing content, while revealing limitations in its capacity to generate novel ideas and its hallucination habit. Although the initial wave of ChatGPT research has generated valuable first insights, much of this early research remains a-theoretical, descriptive, and narrowly scoped, with limited attention to broader social, ethical, and institutional implications. These patterns reflect both the rapid publication pace and the early stage of scholarly engagement with this emerging technology. In response, we propose a conceptual model that maps key focus areas of ChatGPT research and suggest ways of strengthening ChatGPT research by proposing a research agenda aimed at advancing more theoretically informed, contextually grounded, and socially responsive studies of generative and conversational AI.

Healthcare organisations stand at a critical juncture, facing pressing challenges such as constrained budgets, growing demands, workforce shortages and heightened public expectations. Now, more than ever, there is a dire need for innovative solutions. Digital service innovation holds immense promise, offering the potential to improve health outcomes, reduce costs, enhance service quality and elevate patient experiences. However, the adoption of these innovations has been slow. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst, dramatically accelerating the implementation of digital innovations in healthcare organisations. This rapid transformation was a necessary response to unprecedented conditions. However, there are concerns that the momentum gained during the pandemic is waning, with innovation rates slipping back to pre-pandemic levels. This paper argues that we must harness the lessons learned from the pandemic to sustain and increase the pace of innovation, addressing healthcare organisations' urgent challenges. It aims to provide practical insights for healthcare managers at various organisational levels, drawing from a compelling case study of digital service innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Norwegian hospital. Here, practitioners will find six actionable recommendations designed to inspire and empower them to drive innovation in a post-pandemic era. By embracing these insights, healthcare managers can lead their organisations toward a more resilient, efficient and patient-centric future. Now is the time to build on the strides made during the pandemic and transform the healthcare landscape for the better.

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of parents who completed online screening tools about their child’s health, development, and well-being, and parents’ experiences with the public health nurse’s handling of this information during a well-child visit for children aged 0 to 7 years. Twenty well-child visits were observed, and 16 parents were interviewed individually or in pairs using a semi-structured interview guide. The parents’ experiences were explored using reflexive thematic analyses of verbatim transcripts and field notes. Five main themes were developed; Experiencing Ease of Use and Confusion, Evoking Novel Insights, Evoking Insecurity and Vulnerability, Evoking New Expectations and lastly, Navigating Expectations, consisting of two sub themes; Harnessing Potentials and Neglecting Potentials. These findings indicate that online screening tools might provide important benefits, provided that parental insecurity and vulnerability are addressed by information and dialogue.

Information systems (IS) research often seeks to deliver practical impact in addition to the traditional requirement for theoretical contribution. While an admirable goal, it is nevertheless a challenging prospect, as key questions remain around how best to facilitate a relationship between IS academic and practitioner communities. To explore this issue, we analyse multi-case study data from interviews with 24 IS practitioner doctorates, industry contact points, and senior IS academics who sought to create a joint field between academia and practice during their research. Our findings reveal several boundary spanning activities needed to traverse field boundaries and maintain the joint field's existence across the stages of proof-of-concept, proof-of-value, and proof-of-use. Building on insights from the work of Pierre Bourdieu, we further discuss how IS practitioner doctorates operationalised capital, doxa, and habitus to achieve varying degrees of practical impact in their work. Action-oriented recommendations are presented to support practical impact going forward including creolised messages and the mobilisation of capital to change inter-field relationships. By adapting Bourdieu's Theory of Practice to the engaged scholarship discourse in IS, we contribute new insights into how the academia-practice gap might be addressed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a worldwide
state of emergency, triggering extensive digital
innovation within healthcare institutions to recover
from the disrupted services caused by the pandemic.
The purpose of this research is to explore the
phenomena of digital innovation during these
extraordinary conditions and to understand the
impacts during the pandemic and beyond. To do so, we
conducted a systematic literature review by analyzing
130 research articles across research disciplines that
were published during the pandemic. We found that
the innovation processes were highly iterative and
focused on rapid diffusion to address the urgent need
for stabilizing and recovering disrupted services. This
short-term perspective may result in adverse impacts
beyond the pandemic, such as increased inequity.
Moreover, we found that some environmental factors
were highly adaptive to the pandemic, whereas others
were less so. We suggest that organizations should
focus on the latter when building resilience to future
pandemics.

We investigate the organizational capacities required to leverage digital infrastructures both (1) in re-sponse to crisis and external threats, and (2) in realizing the transformative potential associated with the digital infrastructures. Thus, our research question is: What is required for organizations to be able to transform in the face of disruptions and breakdowns? We report from an empirical study of a digital infrastructure innovation process in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which involved extensions and novel development of both the technology and the former service model. While the literature on organizational resilience offers us a conceptual framework to identify organizational capabilities, we lean on literature that foregrounds transformability as a crucial aspect of resilience. We discuss organ-izational capacities which are considered vital in realizing the potential for transformative crisis learn-ing in sociotechnical systems that builds adaptive capacity and influences the enactment of future or-ganisational routines.

The paper argues that existing research on information quality (IQ) mainly focuses on the primary use of electronic health record (EHR) data, whereas IQ in secondary use of EHR data needs further deliberation. The current view of IQ in a healthcare context is static. It assumes that once the EHR system generates the infor- mation product, individual users may act on the information based on their subjective perception of its quality. However, this view ignores the complexities of secondary use of EHR data, in which users are actively involved in (re)generating and communicating the information product. Thus, IQ does not remain static but keeps on transforming through active engagement and interpersonal communication. To contribute to this debate, we conducted a qualitative case study in a Norwegian healthcare context by employing an IQ life cycle model. In conclusion, we enhanced the existing IQ model by (1) adding interpersonal communication, (2) showing the interrelations of the IQ dimensions, and (3) integrating the mechanisms of the transformation process for IQ in secondary use of EHR data. In doing so, we unfold the dynamics of IQ in the secondary use of EHR data.

The existing literature on information quality (IQ) provides limited understanding of how roles influence IQ in healthcare. The traditional way of understanding roles such as collectors, custodians, and consumers assumes that data are simply transformed into information and subsequently used by consumers. However, this does not explain how interpersonal communication influences IQ. In reality, the actors involved can actively change the quality of healthcare information through transformation, translation, or distortion. Latour’s idea of intermediaries and mediators can be an appropriate lens for understanding these roles. Latour defined intermediaries as socio-technical actors who simply transport information, whereas mediators can transform, translate, distort, and change the meaning of information. Following Latour’s idea, we conducted a qualitative case study of quality assurance in a Norwegian healthcare organization. In doing so, we illustrated how IQ mediators can distort or create shared understanding of quality assurance information, which further influences enactment.

Electronic health record (EHR) systems promise to deliver high quality care to the patient by making patient data digitally available for multiple access. By applying the theory of affordances as an analytical lens, we found that accessibility to patient data can provide the affordances of auditability, systematizability, visualizability, communicability, prioritizability, and accountability. However, to actualize these EHR affordances, we must deal with personal, social, and environmental conversion factors that enable or inhibit the actualization process. To understand the intricacies of actualization of EHR affordances, particularly in information processing activities, we have conducted a qualitative case study where EHR was used in quality assurance of healthcare. The study contributes by revealing the nature of EHR as an ensemble artifact, and identifying path-dependencies between affordances, dynamics of dependencies, and conversion factors that influence the actualization of EHR affordances. Based on the analysis, we suggest implications for theory and practice.
